  2. I had to open my NAS up to put some new 2.5" SSDs in it for my LANCache to run on as it had just been running on my HDDs as a test, so I figured what better time than now to take some photos and do a post? Specs: Case - Sliger CX3702 Motherboard - Asus Pro W680M-ACE SE CPU - Intel 14600k Cooler - Noctua NH-D9L RAM - 2x Kingston 32gb ECC DDR5 HBA - LSI 9400-16i Power Supply - Corsair 850W SF850L HDDs - 2x 4tb Ironwolf Pro, 2x 16tb Ironwolf Pro, 2x 18tb Ironwolf Pro SSDs - 1x 128gb 2.5" Samsung Boot Drive (This is an old SSD that I used to have in a PC?) - 2x 2tb NVME Drives - 2x 2tb 2.5" SSDs Notes for people in future - If your rack is 18" deep and the server is 17.72", you won't have room for cables, so I needed to get some tin snips and cut a hole in the back of my rack so that ethernet and power would fit.. But then I used tape so it wasn't sharp on the cables! (Also, I promise I vacuumed those spider webs...) Looks just like a bought one! Here's a photo before I tidied my rack, still has the old Synology on top of the new NAS before I transferred all my data. I'll add another photo after I get everything back in the rack, I have tidied things up a lot since then Other items in the rack: Synology DS916+ (Replaced with this new NAS) Intel NUC (Runs my Plex server until HexOS supports intel GPU passthrough) Eufy Homebase (For my doorbell) Unifi UDM-SE Unifi 24Port Pro switch
  3. Not an advert but I thought this was really informative especially for the budget conscious: Edit to add that I thought the DAS/SFF combo was pretty cool and tagging @ulfn @Sonic

  5. It's not so much new gear for me, but I'm looking for anything which maximises M.2 slots. I have never bothered to have or build a NAS before now, but the power available at this point is pretty amazing, so going all-flash seems key for me. I used to track how filesystems were going with tiered storage, as I planned slow spinning rust tier and a modest amount of SSD for fast tier. But these days I just don't see the need for HDDs in there, so tiered storage no longer seems necessary. I do like the idea of the Jonsbo N5 with water cooling though ๐Ÿ™‚
  6. I still want a jonsbo n5 but outside of that the 120+ tb ssds are what i see in my dreams ๐Ÿ˜…

  8. Title - just curious what new DIY / Home lab / NAS hardware has your attention recently?
  9. Wifi 7 is out and here I am just upgrading to 6e....
  10. I seem to have the same issue, currently on TrueNAS-24.10.2.1. Haven't made any changes since it was last working except updates to truenas
  11. File Syncing Password management Cookbook (mealie) Rom Storage Steam Game Storage maybe eventually for remote play Media Server The one thing I am going to have to do more research on is how to get it to store my documents from windows so that I can then have it sync to my other non-windows machines. So it's my "cloud storage" but then use my Cloud Storage OneDrive and sync with that once every 3-6 hours as an off site backup. And hopefully it'll do a better job than oneDrive. One Drive has gotten better over the years, but Now that I'm on Linux and Windows I'd like something to harmonize my environments.
  12. I'm in the same boat. Active Backup for Business and Active Backup for M365 are a key part of my backup strategy. All the other apps I used to run on my Synology are now running on a different platform. The problem is that these backup apps are just very solid on Synology, and I havenโ€™t found any good alternatives yet.
  13. I am hoping for a Solution that provides equivalent apps to Synologies Active Backup for Business Active Backup for M365 Synology Drive These are the Apps that currently bind me to Synology. Ther simply is no comparable solution in terms of stability and ease of use right now. A bit further down the wishlist but also important is the Integration of / easy Setup for a collaboration office solution like onlyOffice with client side software apps and Chat, Mail & Calender functionality as a self hosted alternative to Microsoft 365. There is demand for this from several of my customers but all the solutions out there always overwhelm them and are abandoned after a short while. I need something I can set up for non tech savvy users that they can use without much hassle.
  14. I think I have the same issue. I think I made a mistake with this software I will do a fresh install of truenas without hexOS to see if that fixes my issue. I can't even ping my router. I guess the word Beta means no support in these circles.

  16. "Annoncements" LOL
  17. In this section, below Featured Posts, this is spelled 'Annoncements'. Not a big issue, but hopefully quick to fix!
  18. Most of the home lab/DIY content I've seen recently is REALLY unhappy with these changes. Glad I never locked in with Synology.
  19. No, but if youโ€™re a military service member, send me a dm.
  20. Thank you! I will look into Immich. Seems a bit easier. Plex also makes sense in that case with plexamp. Need to figure out the site hosting though, even how much performance this is.
  21. You can use something like Navidrome for Music Streaming, since you need a reverse proxy anyway this can be setup quite easily to be reachable over the Internet and is not behind a paywall.
  22. yes, usually people use immich here but photoprism should work too If your friend is on the same network as you it should plenty easy for them to back up stuff as well if they are on different networks, you would need to setup something like a reverse proxy for them. this can work, just the ease of it is pretty variable. I believe this can be done easily with plexamp but some features are locked behind a paywall. It does get a bit harder when you try to do this outside of plex absolutely no idea, not something i have done myself or even looked into. hexos is going to get built in vm support in the future. at this time outside of plex and immich setup most things are done manually via the truenas interface in the future more apps are planned to be able to install in 1 click
  23. Hey, so I am a bit new to servers. I want to build a NAS and hope that I can do the following with it: Photo/video backup. For myself and maybe a friend with his own library. Was looking into photoprism with photosync. I guess it would be 2 photoprism libraries in this case. Maybe something for high quality music, where I can place everything and stream from it Host 2 websites, I guess this is like running 2 linux based VMs simultanously? Can HexOS do this without too much manual work? I can code, but my background is as a front end game developer, quite different. I have implemented back-end integration systems though, just never anything back-end itself.
  24. Will there be a 2025 Memorial day sale? I am considering purchasing HexOS
  25. Create a bootable USB drive and use something like Dr Parted or, perhaps even better in your case Rescuezilla, to live boot into your system which will give you the ability to view drive contents and, if you use Rescuezilla, create a backup of your primary OS drive before installing the second drive intended as a mirror.
  26. Never apologize for swearing. It's evolution's way of micro-stress reductions. IMHO
  27. How can I see what is on my boot-pool? because the drive is 92% full and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to reduce.
  28. ok so upon further research it would seem that for some reason, portainer was installed onto the boot-pool and is filling it up. I cannot figure out how to move portainer to my main-pool. and I really dont want to have to redo all of the configuration I went through with my containers.
