Oh great, now we have multiple "official" sources of information. And just to be clear, the calendar third quarter is July 1st to September 30th. That's about twelve days. to Q4. Yeah I know Eshtek is well within their rights to create their own financial calendar that could put the end of Q3 in December like many large corporations. But until we hear differently, we are still in beta with no official release. Just for context I pulled the following definition of beta from google. "A beta refers to the stage in software development where a product is released to a select group of users for testing and feedback before its official launch. It allows developers to gather valuable insights, identify and fix bugs, and make improvements based on user experiences.". I am in the beta because I contributed my cash to the cause like most everyone else in the forums. And correct me if I am wrong but buying into a beta is pretty common, especially on windows or in the gaming world. If the beta needs more work we would just have to accept that but that goes both ways. Saying something coming in Q3 without establishing what Q3 mean and if that expectation is still true is as important and the user community accepting change without clubbing a company over the head with old estimates (if that company is honest and gives updated estimates). Can we establish where the official source is (and if you think you already have, you have completely underestimated a user community ability to wreck your perfectly good plan). And can we stop saying "we didn't promise anything" followed up by "we have already said that would be in the third quarter". Those are quotes take directly from the forum under the title VM & version 1.0. And even though this is a good example of the clubbing with old posts I said we shouldn't do, it is also a good example of this makes perfect sense to the poster but not the audience. Takeaways: User community stop using passive aggressive tactics to try to get your own personal additions unless specifically asked for like "What apps would you like to see next". Developers/moderators/leadership you are physically incapable of over communicating at this juncture of the project. And as I said above, if you think you already have, you have completely underestimated a user community ability to wreck your perfectly good plan. I am so excited about this application and it potential that I have told more that 100 people about it. While many are taking a more conservative approach and waiting for things like the announcement of the monthly price, I have a couple candidates for the buddy backup when it comes available. And as I have said before, this app is already a success for me. I just hope we can start tightening things up soon.

Q3 update question - Moving to Fangtooth from Electric Eel
zipityzi replied to Patto647's topic in Roadmap & Feature Requests
A month ago on /r/hexos, empahsis mine: If we assume the slower track, Q3 (beta) runs on TrueNAS 25.04 Q4 (stable) runs on TrueNAS 25.10 Eshtek's communication is kind of sporadic; their website ought to be the souce of ground truth for key announcements, like a good old chronological blog. -

Q3 update question - Moving to Fangtooth from Electric Eel
Avari replied to Patto647's topic in Roadmap & Feature Requests
so long as plans didn't change the Q3 update won't be going to 25.x. The 1.0 will be going to 25.10 and 25.04 will be skipped. -

Q3 update question - Moving to Fangtooth from Electric Eel
zipityzi replied to Patto647's topic in Roadmap & Feature Requests
I suspect it will be Fangtooth (25.04), since the "Q3" update ought to ship in September. TrueNAS has estimated Goldeye (25.10) ships stable in October (10 = 10th month = October). Two theories, at least, I think: Slower: HexOS likely started "Q3" before 25.10 had a public beta. So HexOS builds on the current stable release at the time, which was 25.04. So most HexOS releases will lag behind the TrueNAS release. Faster: HexOS, by virtue of partnering with TrueNAS, has access to the 25.10 builds earlier than we plebians. That means HexOS starts with an earlier non-public TrueNAS release. I'm leaning towards the slower version, as that removes some variables and is easier for HexOS. And, for us, hopefully it means fewer bugs as we'll get a slightly maturer version of TrueNAS, not unlike TrueNAS Enterprise which also lags stable now. Hopefully we get the official answer in the next two weeks. -
i would love to see this as well- currently running 2 servers and would love to consolidate

HexOS installation on top of existing TrueNAS

Ahoy, did a quick look but couldn't find an answer, So do we know if HexOS will be moving to TrueNAS Fangtooth or Goldeye for the next release "Q3"? Im running a intel N355 and Electric Eel 24.10 doesn't seem to detect a few features of the processor (Onboard Graphics) and Network interfaces, I assume this is kernel related with 24.10 relating the N355 release. When I force upgrade TrueNas to Fangtooth 25.04 the onboard graphics start working but it breaks the HexOS interface.

Curious if Battlemage (B580) cards are able to transcode for Plex in HexOS now? I haven't set my server up yet, but I was looking to upgrade from my decade old GTX980.

Thank you for sharing this very detailed guide. I've been wanting to set it up and it seems pretty easy to follow! // HexOS ought to have a simplified app UI for Tailscale because it seems painless. Ideally, it's not a "metered services" that HexOS will charge for, because Tailscale uses your own bandwidth and its free tier is already fantastic.

Do we have any expected timeline for the Q3 update? I only ask because I wanted support for TrueNAS 25.10 which carries Blackwell NVIDIA drivers but that only comes out end of October.

Adding my whip. 1990 Toyota supra. 7m-Ge, although this mfr just started making the forbidden milk shake. 😞 Looking into a 1UZ swap from a SC400. What the internet says, it is basically a simple drop in with minor work and I used the W58 trans that's already in my car! I'd love to build a JZ, but alas I am broke. 😕

At the moment, the only option is to install HexOS from scratch. It cannot be installed on top of an existing TrueNAS.

Whelp. I'm going to call it. The 710 platform is much more power hungry and less efficient than I thought it was going to be but it was fun playing server hardware. The biggest drawback is having pcie 2.0 x8 slots and the older slower ram. I have an old 7700k platform that while maxes out at 64 gb ram. Should be faster and more efficient and let me use a modern gpu. Since I only have one hexos license, how do I move everything over to the new machine? The boot drive and the storage drives are incompatible with my z170 mobo so I can't just plop them into the new system.

Dear Community, I'm currently in the Process of building a NAS Array. Currently i'm lacking the funds to buy a HexOS License but planning top use it down the road. I haven't installed an OS at this point. My Question is Can HexOS be installed/applied to an already existing TrueNAS installation or does it need to be set up from scratch? I'm not necessarily talking about Arrays or Pools themselves, rather the Base Operating System. Thanks for any answers in advance

i think 64 gigs is not needed 48 gigs is a better sweet spot

I had this issue and I had to add https://<IP>:<Port> to "Custom server access URLs" under network advanced settings in plex server settings. After that I logged in again in the apps and they worked.

yikes, thats super unlucky. verbatim had a reputation for making quality drives so im quite surprised.
-
Quick update on this, I had 2 failures of the verbatim (OS) disks in a short time already, so I would recommend going for different OS disks. Because they were 256, and other decent brands didn't really have something similar, I needed to put in bigger disks to replace this with those disks. So, if you can, put in things like, Seagate, Samsung, Corsair etc.

See this article. Perhaps it give you enough insight, so you can make a choice. https://b3n.org/truenas-vs-proxmox/
-
It really depends on what the goal of your server is. I have two licenses. I run HexOS bare metal, where the main purpose is data storage and backup. I also have a Proxmox server that runs a HexOS VM. I use Proxmox with PBS as my virtualization platform and HexOS/TrueNAS for storage. However, HexOS/TrueNAS can also be used as an app and virtualization platform. To some extent, Proxmox and TrueNAS share similar functions, but each has its own focus and strengths.
-
I don't envy you this kind of a challenge. Figuring out which of the three types any given reported problem is will likely be the majority of work.
-
So I have yet to try VM's in Hex OS yet but I am a avid Prox user " 4 compute nodes and 5 Ceph cluster nodes with a 60tb prox backup server" My main question is do you need all things in one box? The way I run my home prox setup is using hexos as a mass storage media and the prox uses SSD for VM/Container OS storage.
