  2. Thanks a lot for the answers. Do you mean the 7E10 models? Even though they do not go as high as 12TB?
  3. Today
  4. defintely also check out the prices for seagate exos drives, they are surprisingly affordable. its very possible your cpu despite its age is more than adequate for transcoding. i would test it on its own first prior to committing to a gpu. a gpu would add idle power draw and the costs do add up over time.
  5. intel has said so many times and were wrong so many times about 13th and 14th gen being fixed so regardless i wouldn't touch it with a 10 ft pole. mobo is good bc it uses an intel nic which is preferred if your case fits it i would go with the slightly cheaper but wayyy better Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE V2 definitely consider a different case that has plenty of mesh for airflow purposes. arctic p14 pro has recently been released so i would consider that over the p14 max but yeah overall solid choices
  6. Looks like a solid system. No dramatically oversized boot drive, Intel NIC, CMR HDDs (if you stay with the Red Plus variant, absolutely avoid SMR drives) Depends on what your needs are, but as a NAS with only plex and not to many streams in parallel, this should be up to the task. You can edit a post 5-10min after you posted it, after that you can no longer edit it.
  7. Oh, that was a typo. The motherboard is actually GA-Z97-D3H https://www.gigabyte.com/us/Motherboard/GA-Z97-D3H-rev-11/sp#sp, which actually has Intel NIC. So maybe not so hopeless after all? And also there is a Corsair AX850 PSU. PS: Am I missing something or it is not possible to edit posts after they are published?
  8. I have a bunch of old components and I am wondering if they could be turned into a HexOS machine. Which will basically only run Plex. MOBO: Gigabyte GA-Z97M-D3H (rev. 1.1) https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-Z97M-D3H-rev-11 CPU: Intel® Core™ i5-4460 https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/80817/intel-core-i54460-processor-6m-cache-up-to-3-40-ghz/specifications.html RAM: 16 GB DDR3 (this kit https://www.kingston.com/en/memory/search/discontinuedmodels?partid=KHX1600C9D3X2K2/8GX and two of these https://www.memory4less.com/crucial-gaming-memory-blt4g3d1608et3lx0-16fer2) SSD (for HexOS): Samsung 840 PRO 240 GB https://www.samsung.com/us/business/support/owners/product/840-pro-series-256gb/ HDDs: Those I will buy, probably 3x 12TB WD Red Plus. GPU (for transcoding?): MSI GTX 1070 Ti Gaming https://www.msi.com/Graphics-Card/GeForce-GTX-1070-Ti-GAMING-8G/Specification I am worried this might be too old and too weak (not counting the GPU) to really make sense. Also, the network card on the MOBO is Realtek, not Intel, so maybe that's disqualifying too. What do you think?
  9. I'm still very new to this, my only previous built was my desktop. Now I want to built a NAS. As I don't have hardware laying around, I need to be certain of what I need before buying stuff. For now, my use case would be running HA vm (requirements: 2 cores, 2 GB memory, 32GB storage), Immich (recommended: 4 cores, 8 GB memory) on HexOS (2 cores, 8GB memory, 16GB bootdrive). So for my cpu: adding the above requirements gives me 8 cores, as it quite likely I'll self-host more stuff in the future, doubling that core count sounds precautious. I didn't find any reasonably priced 1851 mobo's with plenty sata 600 so 1700 socket it is. Are the 13th and 14th gen still a no go? Because a i7 14700 is cheaper than a i9 12900K for more cores (20 vs 16). Anyways, this is the list of components I'm thinking of buying. https://be.pcpartpicker.com/list/hMYrjn Could I get some feedback?
  10. Looks like I do have the PERC H700 and it looks like it can't be flashed? The link you shared says 710. What options for the R710 do I have? There's a used server place nearby I can go to inquire about parts needed. Thanks!
  11. I have the same problem still. I did all the stuff said above. No worki. I now stop tinkering, too frustrating...
  12. I decided to go with 18 sticks of 8gb ecc ram, and picked up 2 5570's. Unfortunately I'm over budget on power so I'll be sourcing the 870w psu's. Just waiting now on the final fan. My next question is how to stuff my 3090 or 3060 in it to power an LLM? I know I'll need an external psu. I found this video and the last option sounds like it's the way to go? Anyone have advice? I'm having fun! The latest photos

  14. I bought the Lifetime Plex Pass before the price increase to not have to care about the subscription. With Immich, I will just wait and see for now until Immich is stable and HexOS ready for it. Hopefully, by then it won't be too much trouble.
  15. 100%. We are opening that up this week and doing a little forum reorg. Support forums will still be locked to paid customers only, but announcements will be opened up.
  16. @jonp Part of the problem might be that the Announcements section is locked down. If you come to the site not logged in, or, like myself, have not purchased a license yet, you cannot see any of the progress your team is making. Just my two cents though.
  17. Last week
  18. I started off with Plex but couldn't get my head around their subscription model changes so abandoned it. I'd be interested to hear how you get on with Immich though. I currently use SMBSync2 to backup from my Android devices to my NAS. SMBSync2 no longer listed on the PlayStore, but you can still get it from GitHub https://github.com/Sentaroh/SMBSync2 This only works when you're on your local network, but on the flip side you don't need any additional services / apps running on the NAS as it reads/writes directly from/to the shares.
  19. as someone with only 192gb ram, i think daily about how much better my life would have been if i had 256gb ram instead half kidding, maybe 3/4ths kidding
  20. A reorganization of the forums is in the works and the team is aware that having a few sections hidden can be a bit confusing.
  21. highly highly recommend you post your parts list PRIOR to purchasing things. There are so many gotchas in server building that was never relevant in pc building. honestly even i wish i had someone check my parts list prior. Now after making all the mistakes i'm able to point everyone else in the right direction 😅
  22. so you can put certain apps behind vpn but you would have to do that via docker compose using gluetun. a couple weeks ago i did set it up but i had no idea what i was doing and stumbled my way into getting it working by accident
  23. depending how large of storage you plan to use as much as you can afford. I run 32gb in my system but wish it was 64 or 128
  24. How do you do this on Unifi? I didn't think it was possible - Don't suppose you have a guide?
  25. I knew I wasn't going to use it immediately when I bought it in December. Right now I am figuring out the HW and the use case is to have a Plex server. Nothing fancy, so HexOS is mature enough for that already. Next step for me will be Immich, which clearly needs a bit more time, but Immich itself is planned to go stable this year. No reason to expect HexOS to have Immich figured out before then.
  26. I'll just answer myself. It is. I had previosly updated TrueNas to Fangtooth which is not supported and I messed up the boot pool so I wanted to reinstall but was worried about it (I was thinking on just dropping HexOS and use TrueNas directly with the latest version). I was able to reinstall everything following these steps (I had a recent copy of the truenas config): Follow steps 1 to 6 Update TrueNas from the UI to Fangtooth Reimport TrueNas config profit This was easier than I though and I didn't lose any data.
  27. Hi, is it possible to recover using the truenas config?
  28. Definitely appreciate the feedback. We acknowledge there are multiple areas for improvement, especially in how we communicate and relay information.
