Mandolith Posted December 4, 2024 Posted December 4, 2024 Just what the title says. DuckDNS installation on HexOS? 1 Quote
Braden Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 This would be useful if you want to host an app on your home network but do not have a static IP from your ISP. Since I would strongly discourage making your HexOS NAS directly accessible to the internet, I do not see a reason for supporting something like this. I imagine they will instead put more time into P2P VPNs like Tailscale and Wireguard. If you do wish to use DuckDNS, you can easily do so through the TrueNAS GUI. The target audience for HexOS will likely not need a DuckDNS integration. https://www.truenas.com/community/threads/how-to-install-duckdns-org-a-how-to-guide.24170/ Quote

Would also love to see that (or any generally easy to use reverse proxy) as there are a few things I want to make available to my wife, kids and older family members and having them to use a vpn would be hard to impossible. PizzaNinja Posted December 11, 2024 Posted December 11, 2024 I would agree with this. Much easier to offer my family members a website through reverse proxy to access immich/jellyfin. Quit using plex due to the phone home crap. Quote
Dylan Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 @Terredar & @PizzaNinja - What about tailscale? Quote
PizzaNinja Posted December 17, 2024 Posted December 17, 2024 @DylanDylan Don't have much experience with tailscale, and I am absolutely worthless with Linux. This is why I backed hexos. I'm running my server on windows 11 right now, but need to switch due to reliability reasons. Been having issues running my stuff on windows 11 and also trying to figure out docker. Quote

Been having issues running my stuff on windows 11 and also trying to figure out docker. That's fair. I have zero experience with tailscale but plenty with Linux. The good news is this forum (and others) have TONS of experience that can help walk you through stuff like this. Not trying to convince you to take on something you're not familiar with, only if you think you might like to grow your experience a bit there are good resources available. Quote

TDLR, tail scale uses a 'exit node' inside your home where you tunnel into from your devices. It routes all traffic through that exit node that's running tail scale on it. It's very similar to running a VPN or wireguard at your home. 1 Quote
