Scyto Posted December 4, 2024 Posted December 4, 2024 Integrated default reverse proxy for docker apps so all apps available on 443 inside home network. integrated DNS to support app name.internaldomain.com with reverse proxy (this puts all apps on 443) Lets encrypt SSL by default for all apps all user has to do is buy domain name and enter it above and all just works support for split horizon DNS consider running the DNS service for folks to allow tight integration (this shouldn't preclude use of other dns services) this is not me advocating for how to expose anything externally, that's not an argument i want to get into 😉 19 Quote
Dulli Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 This! It would be really greate to have a feature like this Quote
hdd Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 (edited) Just getting an average user to purches a domain name and point the name servers is a challenge. A 'sub domain' option might be interesting but its funny how the draw of a custom domain is there and then the wider question of it thats the products target audience. I like the turn key reverse proxy and split horizon DNS without thinking abut the implementation 🙂 Edited December 5, 2024 by hdd 1 Quote

Adding and supporting functionality like this probably only makes sense for Eshtek if they add their own margin for buying/renewing domains. Remote access is a must for any NAS that targets regular consumers. Competing NAS products like Synology use subdomains. So I see that as a bare minimum functionality but the functionality as described by @Scyto is exactly the kind of thing that would make Hexos stand out among the rest. In the end, I think the target audience is not people without technical knowledge as they will not buy seperate hardware and software anyway if cheap(ish) all-in-one options like Synology or QNAP exist. The target audience I think is people with enough technical knowledge to have higher demands but not enough to actually do it themselves or do but dont want to spend all the time and effort to do it manually when Hexos can (o rather should) do it automagically. 1 Quote
qlkgwgjxoi Posted December 7, 2024 Posted December 7, 2024 Setting this up myself in my homelab was a mayor pain, and I'm still not completely satisfied with the results. Also I feel not confident enough in my IT security skills to maintain and expose these services to the internet, so I only did it locally. While it probably would be alright, a build-in version, made by people that know what they are doing would be great! Streamlining the process of securely accessing services without VPN would surely be nice and adds a ton of value! Using e.g. Plex, Nextcloud, Paperless and all the other great services on the fly could make other subscription services obsolete. 2 Quote
Stile Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 I'd love to see dynamic DNS support as well. It was a pain to set up Caddy due to an incorrect number of brackets 😕 2 Quote
markrieder Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 In several operating systems (UGREEN OS, FNOS, IstoreOS), I'm not sure which one specifically, but I saw an option to add your own web domain for remote access to the server and applications. I will probably use them temporarily because Hex 1.0 may not arrive until half a year from now and I need to be up and running as soon as possible. Quote
HomeHosted Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 Something like caddy-docker-proxy, traefik or nginx-proxy-manager would probably make it a lot easier. 1 Quote

I'm here for the application configurations, depending on how it goes I can see use in deploying them for clients. I would like to for family but realistically its overkill for most and even a quick Home Assistant OS install might be a better fit with its add-ons. Still all for a hardware 'agnostic' synology like product thought no expectation for a like for like, applications on a NAS never fully felt quite right but I value the space saving too much these days.
