ATEightySix Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 I have an old 1u Dell PowerEdge R410 server collecting dust in a closet. It has 4x 3.5" HDD SAS/SATA bays up front that I want to try to put to use. I only have 2x 8TB IronWolf drives, a couple 4TB drives and a ton of really old 1TB drives. Unfortunately, it doesn't have any internal M.2 or OS drive bays so I will have to sacrifice one of the front hot swap bays for an OS drive, but the first iteration won't be a production deployment so I can play around. I have a ton of old hardware, several OptiPlex PC's that my job was throwing out (nearly identical spec to what Linus used in the LTT video) as well as a load of old machines I can use to cobble something together. Dalhus Posted February 11 Posted February 11 Hi, i also run a R410 and was afraid of sacrifice one of the front bays also.. but then i went to the local computer store and picked up a external usb case and placed it inside the server and connecting it to the usb port above the 4 bays like shown in the picture. And i am sure you already know the 2TB limitation this server has with the default sas card in this server? I ended up doing it the "bad" way and got an H700 Raid card, but that means i had to put all my drives in its own Raid-0 to let HexOS/TrueNAS detect the drives. I would just get a regular LSI card instead of doing it like i did. Quote

Everyone of my machine works with truenas, unraid and Proxmox also HexOS. If you search the message I listed a flashed external flashed sas controller card that i am ordering for my Dell r730XD. Thats the guy i use and he has lots of youtube videos on upgrades and stuff. Edited February 22 by jpadgett Quote
