Sharkdance Posted December 1, 2024 Posted December 1, 2024 found this local for $200.. 1) is it worth the asking price of $200.? 2) is this suitable for HexOS home server? Dell PowerEdge R230 Server Rack-mount with Dell Ready rails Intel Core i3-6100 32 GB RAM DDR4 2 x 10TB SAS Drives RAID Capable PERC H330 Raid Controller Enterprise iDRAC VGA Display Port Ethernet - dual ports Dell Ready Rails Power cable included Monitor/keyboard/mouse not included No OS included Quote
Aloop Posted December 1, 2024 Posted December 1, 2024 1) sound reasonable, I would pay 200€ if I would have a need for a rack server. 2) does it have powersupplie/s? Does noise matter for your location/setup? This is 1U rack mount server, correct? They usually loud for home, assuming server will be in the living space or next to it. Quote

Yea, It looked like a good deal to me. If for nothing else the two 10TB drives might be worth it. (if they are good) But I do not have a rack to mount it and I wasn't thinking about noise. Thanks for bringing that up. I have a home office and it would have to sit on the desk on the opposite side of the room. But Im not opposed to buying a cheap rack at a later date if it works out. I was assuming it had power supplies because the listing states "power cable included". Quote
Aloop Posted December 1, 2024 Posted December 1, 2024 Rack server (1U/2U) would not be my choice for home office. I would go for tower style server or workstation. I have HP Z800 for this myself and it's not quiet either, but nothing like the Dell 1U I have. (Cannot remember the model) Quote
Aloop Posted December 8, 2024 Posted December 8, 2024 What did you get or are you still looking at the options? Quote
nightpoison Posted December 8, 2024 Posted December 8, 2024 I, personally, would avoid rack mount 1u/2u servers. I looked at them not too long ago. I could have gotten one free from work, but then I started to think on troubleshooting it when things went wrong, parts, mounting, noise, etc and I decided to pass on it. Yes free is free, but I have too many parts and cases I took home with me from work already. I built an ITX based system, running Unraid, in a silverstone sc381 case. Added some Noctua fans and it sits in one of the main rooms of my house, whisper quiet. If they want $200 and it contains working 2x10TB drives, then grab it for the memory and drives. Flip it for $50 to $100, potentially, on Marketplace. I'm about to start looking at building another server for HexOS. And I'm looking at the Jonsbo N5. I'm hesitant because of the drive tray, or lack there of. Quote
Dylan Posted December 8, 2024 Posted December 8, 2024 That thing is going to be loud. You may be able to throttle the fans but that type of server is designed for either a data closet or data center. Quote
Mawson Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 I hope you have a garage or unfinished basement... because servers are LOUD 😅 Quote
