Nitor Posted December 1, 2024 Posted December 1, 2024 I'm looking at buying new drives for a new NAS when I get access to the beta, so was wondering what drives and how many people are using? My current plan is 4x Seagate Exos 16TB but heard from a friend that these things are great but insanely loud. Quote
arvinpw Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 All HDD will have some kind of noise, but not that "kind of annoying" loud. Typically you can put your NAS away from your desk, or better yet, put that in another room. For the drives, any kind of drives is fine, Seagate Exos drives are awesome. For HexOS, initial setup required minimum 2 drives with non expandable option, and min 3 drives with expandable option. Quote
TheCroShow Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 I picked up 4 Western Digital Red Plus 4TB drives for my server. Eager to get my invite so I can install! ❤️ Quote
Magnus Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 Hi there! Just remember to avoid SMR drives (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shingled_magnetic_recording) Those does not work well with ZFS/RAID. 2 Quote
Tuggs Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 It's good that I went with the WD Red Plus drives, as those and the Red Pro drives are CMR. I picked up three of the 4 TB drives so that I could add more storage to the server later after the initial setup. I also got a pair of 256 GB M.2 drives to serve as boot drives. Quote
Cbigfoot Posted December 3, 2024 Posted December 3, 2024 (edited) I have 512 gb kioxia nvme ssd 4 6tb seagate enterprise capacity 3.5 v4 from 2016 but with only ~3 years of like use and 4 years of storage. from an old server that I built and are still healthy will be running it in a old Dell precision 3620 i7 6th gen 16gb ram during beta once it’s out of beta and I’m happy with it it will go onto my prime server which is running win 11 pro 3900x 32 gb ram multiple different ssds (6x1tb nvme in r5 (vms) and 4x2tb in r5(storage I care about) and 4x8tb exos (backups of all my computers as well as less important data as it’s not backed up) spinners in r5 and a 12tb exos for a local backup for the ssd arrays) Edited December 3, 2024 by Cbigfoot Quote
Dylan Posted December 3, 2024 Posted December 3, 2024 After spending WAY too much time evaluating disks, I landed on the 8TB version of these Seagate drives. Got 5 on sale for $150 each, so, as long as they perform and last a good amount of time, I think I'll be happy. Quote
