Buddy-less buddy backup, aka "remote vault"

I don't have a lot of friends and family who care to have a nas. But several of them are fine with a backup of my data sitting in their basement. Currently, I purchased a second hexos license. This is a little overkill, and having a sort of "vault" app or something would be really nice to have.

I'm sure you would be able to find someone on here who would be willing to trade storage with you. We're probably a good ways away from buddy backup being a reality.

Some of my friends have a nas, but not hexos. Them and others wouldn't mind having some backup computer running at their place. But running the full hexos only for a remote hard drive would be a little overkill.

So buddy backup requires hexos? Would it be possible in future to have somekind of trading platform, or maybe just thread for backup buddies is enough.

This seems to be a common sentiment. Right now buddy backup isn't even in planning stages probably. It's just a feature that may or may not happen one day (but probably will given the interest?) Maybe it will require two licenses of hexos, or maybe, given the worry around this, they will commit to having just a single license necessary. That would probably be a bit more complicated to create, but we'll see when the feature comes out.

It would be really cool if the buddy backup could also have a deployable application version that could be installed on a non-HexOS server. But I guess if push came to shove a second license of HexOS should really provide the same functionality

There was mention by one of their investors (Linus Sebastian) about their ideas and then skimmed the water of backup exchange or even talking in the forums and making a connection (if I rememebr). Interestingly Symform did something similar (before they were acquired by Quantum) but in a p2p 'cloud' style and (if I recall correctly) they broke up the locations + central orchestrated.

That would appeal, but given the discounts AWS etc offer on very large storage customers it might be more cost effective to have a 1st party 'cloud' option. That said a client to run a destination appeals a lot more (or keys for a storage bucket etc)! Perhaps a partnership with Backblaze?

That would appeal, but given the discounts AWS etc offer on very large storage customers it might be more cost effective to have a 1st party 'cloud' option. That said a client to run a destination appeals a lot more (or keys for a storage bucket etc)! Perhaps a partnership with Backblaze?

I'm just getting started on my NAS journey so it's cool to hear (read) that other communities have implemented an organized community p2p option in the past.

I could also get behind the big data corporate cloud backup option as well. Something like an at-cost plus 5% admin overhead fee that is available as a monthly subscription up to a certain data size would seem pretty reasonable. Although I think if monthly pricing went any higher than $8 per month I'd quickly be looking for a different option

I think they'll have to roll out the buddy backup feature before we know for sure, but my gut says it would be a 'no' unless they have figured out how to 'adopt' existing TrueNAS deployments at that time. I think Jon is on record somewhere (couldn't find it in a quick search) saying that adopting an existing setup isn't a feature that'll be added any time soon.
