Archion Posted January 15 Posted January 15 Built my "new" server for HexOS finally, a mixture of old and new parts. I'm replacing an aging EOL Synology DS412+. I was able to recycle a lot of parts I had around with minimal expense, except for storage of course. Use case: Mainly Plex, immich and some VMs for home lab stuff initially. The possibilities with the TrueNas back end seem pretty endless. It's my first venture into truenas Quote Mobo: SuperMicro X10Sll-F m-atx (eBay $30) Processor: Intel Xeon CPU E3-1240 v3 @ 3.40GHz (pulled from an old Dell workstation I had sitting for disposal) Memory: 32gb PC3-12800e (eBay $39) HBA: LSI 9210-8i (eBay $25, seems to be a clone but works fine so far) NIC: Intel X540-T1 10gb (pulled from an old server my old job was scrapping years ago) GPU: Nvidia Quadro p400 (pulled from the same workstation above) Boot Pool: 2x256 gb adata SSDs (old stock from a previous project, maybe $50ea?) SSD Pool: 2x150gb Intel Enterprise SSD (pulled from the same server work scrapped) Mass Storage: 4x12tb Seagate Enterprise Capacity drives in RaidZ2 (Server Part Deals $440) I will be expanding the HDD pool with 4 more Seagate IronWolf Pro drives from the Synology one I decommission it. They are recycled from my old job as well, but plenty of life left in them. All stuffed in to an old media center case from 2006 I never threw away, SilverStone LC20M in black. Just enough room for all the drives and sufficient airflow to keep things cool. 2 Quote

Personally, I love when people are re-using HW instead of e-wasting. It's practical, amazing and environmental friendly! The only downsize might be power-efficiency, and even for that I am not sure! I also like that you replace an "EOL Synology DS412+" with what will be a beast 😛 haha. Keep it on! That being said, I also used 2nd hand all parts, except of the drives. I hope that my system will last me for 5-9 years and it can only get two drives (consequently they are mirrored). So just to be on the safe side I decided to get new drives. 1 Quote
