HexOS vs TrueNAS SCALE - How easy to install and use?

Question

Posted

Howdy folks, I unsuccessfully tried to convert my windows 10 "server/NAS" to TrueNAS Scale during New year's holiday after being lambasted by a few of my IT friends. But I ran across quite a few issues while trying to install multiple pieces of software due to my lack of knowledge surrounding virtual machines on linux and my way around the command prompt. I currently run a VM for Home Assistant/Music Assistant to control my sonos speakers with NFC tags, Jellyfin for video streaming locally and through Tailscale to connect from my phone while abroad, And finally- As a NAS for my local systems to backup documents, pictures, and call recordings. Would the design approach of HexOS better fit my use case or does it still seem too rough to currently approach making the second try on HexOS?

I'd also like to know how HexOS approaches setting up storage across multiple differently sized drives as i've got a mishmash of different HDD's and SSD's to form the storage cluster I call "\\Home".

The approach of HexOS would be exactly the same as TrueNAS SCALE.

At this point HexOS is a rather watered down, I would even say - dumbed down, UI for TrueNAS SCALE - anything you can do with HexOS you can do with TrueNAS SCALE, it will require a bit more technical terminology.

The promise here is that HexOS should be easier to setup more complex plumbing around the TrueNAS SCALE ecosystem and make overall management simplified - think of an iOS interface vs a Windows one.

We're all in a waiting pattern at this point, hoping to see some change - but it's going to take time.

At this point there is little difference between HexOS and TrueNAS - the only difference is the deck.hexos.com added interface which actually limits what you can do.

yeah as of today a lot of what you want would have to be done through the truenas interface but fingers crossed after a few updates we can do more a lot easier
