File Browser/Transfers from Devices

Question

Posted

Hey. Completely new to any NAS related devices that aren't basically Synology or have DSM style web interfaces. I just got sent a Zimacube PRO and loaded up the HexOS install I bought. I didn't want to use ZimaOS because I really wanted to used ZFS for all the benefits I've heard about it via LTT/reddit.

Anywho. It seems to be running just fine and I know HexOS is currently very much still a shell. But I've got 100tb of new drives and want to make this my primary backup. Thus for right now, quite literally all I need it to do is store data in raid 5. Literally all im doing is turning it on, backing up data to it and turning it off.

My issue is, it seems like theres no way to transfer files from a drive I plug in, directly to a folder on the device? There isn't any file browser? I prefer this because I can plug in a drive with multiple TBs of data, hit copy and let it run without needing my laptop has a middle man or the restrictions of bandwidth over wifi.

Am I missing something here? Or is this coming eventually. I tried researching TrueNAS to realize that truenas also doesn't have any file browser. But i assume HexOS will eventually?

It may be possible to drop into the shell from the TrueNAS UI and copy files from the portable drive to the share, but I don't think this is the expected pattern.

Once you have a folder created, you would access that folder from another machine and then copy the drive contents to the NAS via SMB over the network.

Portable drive -> Second machine -> SMB -> HexOS Folder

Yeah, that is currently the only way to transfer files from an attached drive to the NAS which is highly inefficient. At least without opening up TrueNAS and typing in the code to do so, which I assume defeats the point of HexOS.

I did see an app called "File Browser," I wonder if that would do the trick?
