New to this NAS thing, is a Dell T605 PowerEdge server a good idea?

I just purchased a Dell Poweredge T605 server and I was wondering if it was a good idea or what members think?

I would need to know the specific specs of said machine because googling it shows many different machines with the same name. 
for example the first one i saw with an opteron is probably not worth the effort.

2 x 2.3Ghz Quad-Core AMD Opteron Processor 2376
CPUs, Bus speed 1000mhz, 8gb mem, system mem speed 800mhz. I also only paid $10 for it.

I mean it looks like it meets minimum specs for truenas/hexos.

Based on some random pdf i found online it supports a max size of 1tb drives which could just be from back in the day when 1tb was the highest available hdd size.
I think since you have it, its worth a shot.

I would say that, depending on where you live, you may want to consider the costs of electricity, and if it'd makes sense in the long run to run something newer.

Depends a lot on where you live, and what you find fun about playing with these things tho 🙂

What is the storage config? PowerEdge systems of that era mostly shipped with PERC RAID configs and may not easily present your disks individually to HexOS/TrueNAS.
If you have a PERC RAID config than your option would be to create individual single-disk RAID0s so as to present each drive up to HexOS/TrueNAS. This may get in the way of OS monitoring of SMART, since a virtual disk will be presented.

Given you bought it for next to nothing I think the biggest factor of it being worth it will be cost to run 24/7 and noise. I acquired a newer power edge for slightly more with a ton of room to expand but even tweaking settings for the lowest fan speeds the humming of the fans was still audible in the next room over with the door closed so it was not suitable for my space
