No storage pool

Hello,

 

Im working on building my new server/NAS but trying to stay in budget.

My budget affords all my hardware and one 2TB m.2 drive, but not also buying the HDDs needed for my ideal storage pool. (6x 18tb drives)

I considered just buying the hardware and running the server without my HDDs to load the OS and learn a bit more about HexOs and TrueNAS. (application loading, vms, and so forth)

After the fact i would then add in my HHDs and set up storage pools.

Any Pros/Cons to this thinking?

 

Ideally this system will replace my current W10 home media server that i use for plex, handbreak, file storage, and various other applications. 

12900k (reusing my current computers mb and cpu) 32g ddr5 6000  AMD 6900xt

AIOs on cpu and gpu.

I like the idea but you really can not do much with HexOS if you only have a boot drive.

and I would recommend 2 boot SSD of the same size and model number.  Keeps it safe if one fails.

 

 

but if your current media pool is ZFS you can import it into HexOS but going into the treunas interface and importing it.

Also for the boot drive I use 128 gig drives.  And it is more then enough.

i would get smaller boot drive just to save some money.

I would skip the gpu unless you have any workloads that need a gpu or if you think the igpu is adequate for handbrake.
Gpu is gonna be adding a non negligible amount of power consumption. On a 24/7 idle 6700xt at my admittedly high electricity rates it would cost me north of $40 a year
