Sorry in advance if I've missed this somewhere else... however I wanted to know if version 1.0 will be built on top of the beta, or will everything up until the HexOS 1.0 release essentially have to be redone with a fresh install?

I understand that this is a beta, but given that this product is marketed as a plug n play NAS OS solution I think it is a fair question for setting proper expectations

I think for now everyone is under the assumption that it will update on top of current installation but like you said it is a beta a things might change

I’m under the assumption that it won’t… but you’re probably right about most who have bought a license to think that it would, because of the way it’s been marketed. Power users will have little issue upgrading but the target audience might have some more trouble

As long as we can migrate any pool we have it shouldn't be a big deal

however it'll be a super pain in the ass if we can't and have to delete everything.
For the longest time i was trying to figure out how to move my data to a new server without buying new drives.
My solution was just to bite the bullet and get more drives which is kinda painful at 5 x 14tb

Yea I deviated from the initial setup thinking I just import existing pools but it didn’t work out that way. Would be a major pain point if that isn’t implemented by 1.0 release

I had a similar solution with 4 x 12tb to get off of my Synology. Everything besides the motherboard should be here tomorrow! Unfortunately my motherboard is delayed until Monday.

But I was debating on leaving 4 drives empty for now in case I do have to wipe everything with 1.0. I hope that we can just update! A shame to leave $460 in drives sitting around waiting for the full release.

as far as i know, the update will be through web UI, and will not require to wipe out your entire pool configs

Mostly right.  So the UI/UX will update at a much faster pace during beta as we catch up to the underlying capabilities of TrueNAS SCALE.  So a single TNS release such as 24.10 can actually carry us quite a ways before we need an underlying OS update.  We're already starting to align though.  We specifically choose 24.10 so we could focus on Docker and RAIDz expansion as early features.  We're already eyeballing specific features in Fangtooth (25.04) for proper inclusion in HexOS.

Furthermore, we really don't want users updating HexOS through the TrueNAS SCALE UI.  We are going to be more reserved about pushing updates for new releases and wait primarily for TrueNAS .1 releases after their main releases for future updates.  That is the one of the reasons HexOS is still in beta right now.  24.10 is stable, but 24.10.1 is the bugfix/hotfix release that comes after and that cadence is followed for all TrueNAS development cycles.  We believe this is a better path for customers.  Security updates will follow with proper cadence because again, the build's are being produced by iXsystems.  This is all a function of our "Powered by TrueNAS" partnership.

THAT said, we will have "beta" tracks potentially after 1.0 for HexOS where users will be on a .0 release (possibly even beta or RC), so you can test a new feature.  Hefty warnings will be provided for anyone treading this path, so unless you have test gear, we won't encourage this.  But for those that want to see the future a little early and help us test it out, you'll be on the inside track ;-).

My old drives are still in my das. I was really hoping to just plug my das into my server for extra storage for less important things. Fingers crossed it'll work
