OK since this OS is targeted to the "home user", I'm assuming that demographic includes noobs in the homelab space - which includes me. I only started building servers and hosting my own services within past couple of years. . . have learned a ton and when I saw HexOS surface, I got super excited! So many questions - so forgive me if this is a dumb one - or if it's been answered elsewhere already, - kindly point me to that convo. . . but what do we think about running a HexOS VM on any of the various virtualization platforms a homelab admin might select? Asking because I've run TrueNAS in a Proxmox guest & everything worked well, but found myself thinking the same thing Linus pointed out in the LTT video - tons of enterprise functionality in TrueNAS but for this audience, perhaps overcomplicated & thus intimidating to some folks.
Anyway,, I'm interested in opinions of the experts out there on overall performance / speed / reliability, etc. of running HexOS in a VM, with specific interest in passthrough hardware like NVME SSDs, traditional mechanical drives, or even GPUs. Should we expect the same kind of performance as TrueNAS in a VM? Though I know that this mostly depends on the virtualization platform itself and of course the capabilities of the actual hardware in use, but are there any gotchas or things to consider with HexOS? Also noting this might be something of a future-functionality question, but interested in the vision for HexOS in this forum. nonetheless.
Thanks for inputs from all - and thanks to LMG (and other) investors for HexOS in general. A huge gap in the market finally being answered imo.
