A few weeks ago I did approximately the above sequence, but I had to manually recreate the share folders in HexOS based on what the pool showed in truenas. Maybe it's different now, but there needs to be a cleaner way to back up the configuration and restore the boot drive without a hacky workaround. The whole point of HexOS is I should never have to go into truenas or do anything very manual. I also had to redownload my apps but this was just plex and Immich so not a big deal for me, but bigger for others.

Absolutely. I also had both my boot drives fail. I was able to import the pool in truenas and recaggiger my Immich database but it was a pain. Ended up with a silver lining of Plex finally playing nicely on reinstalling but this is a huge problem that needs to be solved.

Over a year later and I'm seeing similar behavior. I think my actual issue was a bad sata cable or port. Tried initially just reseating the cable and the drive that was previously showing IO errors disappeared. Then I plugged into a different port with different cable and it showed up just fine. It's still showing the pool as unhealthy but I think that's from previous errors, and also unrelated. Bottom line I agree there needs to be a clean option in HexOS to replace a failed drive that's no longer showing up.

Sorry if this has been mentioned already. There needs to be a way to store a boot disk config or recovery file on one of the arrays to allow easy recover of a dead boot drive (all done within HexOS! I shouldn't have to go into truenas if I don't know what I'm doing). I did install on redundant boot drives but bought too cheap and they both failed simultaneously. The only way I could find to recover was a fresh install without the array drives connected, then plug them in and manually recreate the exact share folder names in the HexOS from the list in truenas. Also, I would love to see a way to transfer or transition the boot drive to another drive by simply connecting a new drive. That way if all you had for a boot drive was a 1 Tb but wanted to use that for something else later you could get a smaller drive and transition.

I can confirm that if you do a fresh install you can set up the folders again and have access to all data, but you need to do things in a specific order and with the array disks unplugged (if you try to set up a new array through HexOS interface it will wipe the drives). If you know all your folders now you won't need to go into into truenas. I really think there needs to be a recovery feature in case of boot drive failure. Here's a link to a thread with good instructions on how to recover, but it would work to "downgrade" as well, though kinda janky. The reconnecting by naming the same as seen in truenas also worked for me. It didn't want to the first time trying to set up with private access, but tried again with defaults and it worked. If anyone is wondering, I did "unclaim" my old server, and just named everything the same again. Had to restore after both my boot drives died ... I don't recommend "Orico" SSD's 😭. Learned my "you get what you pay for" lesson again and now have a WD boot drive redundant with some crappy old spinning rust from a old laptop that I'll replace at some point.

Instructions here worked for me, though I have to either launch the webUI via TrueNas UI, or manually using the IP:port.

Sorry, what exactly do I need to type into the browser? The launch button worked when I first set up the applications but now nothing happens.

Yeah the more I browsed on Amazon I noticed I could get a Patriot Memory 128GB ssd for 13 bucks... So I'll probably just get a pair of those and mirror them. If one fails I'll replace it with something fancier. But I might try the USB drive anyways now just out of curiousity. I'll report back with findings, for SCIENCE!

Appologies if this has been covered but can't find it yet (or maybe the answer is so obvious no one's needed to ask? 😅). Would I be able to use a flash drive as the boot drive? I'm assuming I'd need a second for the install media. I understand this isn't a good idea for a number of reasons, but I plan to add a second (actual) SSD as mirror boot drive later

I bought this primarily so I could continue to advance my Plex library because I'm sick of things I like dissappearing and now you have to have 5+ streaming services. I'm REALLY pumped about the Immich support because I wanted a good picture backup solution. Tailscale support would be really excellent. Not sure if there's an existing app for this but a self-served password manager would be pretty nifty.
