Newbi here - keen to learn by doing.
I've run out of free cloud storage and I'm all in on becoming self relient for photo backups etc. Hopefully I can help out the rest of my family too.
I'd also like to run an e.g. Valheim server for my mates (typically 4 of us).
Lastly, I think I'd like to do some home automation stuff at some point down the road, but I haven't really started to learn about that stuff.
My needs are obviously pretty low end. But here's the question:
Do i build a NAS with second hand stuff I can find on marketplace, or do I use my current PC parts and upgrade instead?
It feels like the CPU's going on marketplace in my area are still worse than what I've got, but only just...would I be daft to get second hand hardware that is...almost as old as what I'm currently running? Also most folks are wanting to sell whole systems which come with a bunch of stuff i don't want to pay for (GPU, old storage that I don't want to be touching etc.).
Current build:
CPU: Intel Core i7-8700K 3.7 GHz 6-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock 3 67.8 CFM Fluid Dynamic Bearing CPU Cooler
Motherboard: Asus Prime Z370-A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
Memory: Crucial CT8G4DFS824A 8 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-2400 CL17 Memory
Video Card: Gigabyte GAMING OC Radeon RX 7600 XT 16 GB Video Card
Power Supply: EVGA 650 GQ 650 W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply
For example, this is selling near me for £150. Would it do for what I want?
Power Supply: Corsair CS650M full modular Processor
Intel i74790K 4GHz quad core socket 1150 processor
Cooler: Phanteks PH-TC12DX air cooler in red
Motherboard: Asus Maximus VII Ranger ATX
RAM: 12Gb Corsair & HyperX mix DDR3 memory Graphics card: 6GB Asus GTX1060 Dual OC
I don't want to be spending loads of money for the sake of it. I guess I'm looking for value so if spending more is the right thing to do I'll do it, but equally I don't want to be wasting money on stuff I don't really need.
Grateful for advice!
