  1. In case there is any confusion still on this topic, a local UI is coming...100%. We actually have already begun work (we have a docker container with the UI running at this point, but it's not fully functional yet).

  5. Just a comment on the question itself, ”What new gear are you interested in?” I believe this topic by @Dylan will have eternal life. I compare this to a Swedish hifi forum I take part in, where a user in September 2005 posted the topic ”What are you listening to right now?” Two simple and innocent questions started it all. ”What’s rotating on your record player right now? What’s playing in Windows Media player at this moment? ” This topic is still active now in 2025 with new posts regularly. Hifi people always listen to music 😉 And in the area we’re in, there will always be new computer gear to catch your eye. Or new software, for that matter. I believe this was like hitting the nail on the head. A reflection on a Monday.

  8. Right, we're not filtering out the messages from TrueNAS yet, so those update notifications are coming from that, not us. Safe to ignore for now. We will have OS updates in the near future with the new Activity card we are adding in the Q2 update.

  9. I would like to see an option of an one click full disk encryption at system setup (or disk/pool or per application setup). Then it should work like in the TrueNAS interface with a warning ⚠️ about the possibility to lose all data if the corresponding password/key is not stored properly and so on... It would be preferable to encrypt all the folders below automatically too, since the title “Full disk encryption ...".

  11. This is not really a HexOs issue, It's the lack of good Realtek drivers for Linux based systems.

  12. I personally would go with intel if you plan on hosting a plex or jellyfin server. If you don't it doesn't really matter what you go with. One thing to keep in mind the network interface card (nic) on your motherboard is not compatible with hexos. the cheapest compatible one i could find is this one https://nl.pcpartpicker.com/product/WQTp99/asus-rog-strix-b650e-i-gaming-wifi-mini-itx-am5-motherboard-rog-strix-b650e-i-gaming-wifi However that one is short on sata ports. like your original pick so you will still need a hba card. you should go with the seagate exos drives that are higher end and cost less. (don't ask me to explain why its like this because i have no idea)

  13. yes, usually people use immich here but photoprism should work too If your friend is on the same network as you it should plenty easy for them to back up stuff as well if they are on different networks, you would need to setup something like a reverse proxy for them. this can work, just the ease of it is pretty variable. I believe this can be done easily with plexamp but some features are locked behind a paywall. It does get a bit harder when you try to do this outside of plex absolutely no idea, not something i have done myself or even looked into. hexos is going to get built in vm support in the future. at this time outside of plex and immich setup most things are done manually via the truenas interface in the future more apps are planned to be able to install in 1 click

  14. I personally think ecc isn't the biggest deal for homelabs. Easiest way to get ecc support is with modern ryzen. (I forget if older ryzen supports it)

  15. Hey all, as the name implies I would like to see a simple checkbox to make folders available via nfs. As a bonus a list of IP ranges that are allowed to access the share would be perfect. The user mapping to the user owning the folder so that I do not need to care about permissions and just access the data via NFS could be handled automatically as a default. Please feel free to ask for clarification and to add your ideas below!

  16. So I've been having issues with this for a few weeks. I will install Immich and it will do one of two things. It will install and start deploying but just spin on deployment indefinitely. I let it go for nearly an hour one day. It will install and then say it running but then I can't access it when I click launch, it will just say unable to connect. Then every so often it randomly says "deploying" again for a second or two and then it goes back to saying running. Obviously I've restarted a few different times to see if that would help but that didn't help. I use Firefox as a web browser but I downloaded and tried to access it in chrome and that still didn't work. I am unable to find a version to check and make sure that I'm running the most up to date version of hexOS and I do have a notification in the notification dashboard saying a system update is available. go to system settings -> update to download and apply the update. When I go to settings there is no update button so I assume that it's up to date? I use Plex on a daily basis and it works pretty flawlessly. I'm not sure what other information you may need, I'd appreciate some help.

  17. First of all, it's a pleasure to be part of the community. I apologize if someone else has already written this, but I was looking through the posts. English isn't my native language, and I didn't see it anywhere. I understand that hexos is a custom TrueNAS ISO. It would be nice if, during installation, it showed things like disk startup, updates, and user loading. On the other hand, like many others, I had issues moving the server from one network to another, claiming a server that had already been claimed, or other things I had to do, such as commands or even a fresh installation. I think it would be very useful in the TrueNAS panel have an app from day 0, called "hexos app" or "hexos conection," etc., that handles several things, such as: You can log in and out of the account, information about that account and the connection to the online panel, It can update the device's internal IP to the online panel, shoh public ip, etc You can also add features such as DDNS, factory reset, I also saw that Cloudflare tunnels were recommended. This same app could provide a service similar to "zero trust," capable of solving the problem of not having to touch the router to provide a tunnel to the online panel and having tabs with the services that are internal to our local network. future familiar conections, etc Well, other than that, I like where development is going, I hope. I'm looking forward to the new changes and I send you all a big hello.

  19. I've been on 24.,10.2.2 for some time, no issues and no conflicts with HexOS. It's Fangtooth (25.04***) that you need to stay away from for now.
    1 point
  20. So, I installed version 24.10.2.2 and was able to install Plex, but Immich stopped installing at 60%. Before doing this, I backed up all my files on the server to my external hard drive, so everything is fine. I think I’ll wait for a response from the Eshtek team, and in the meantime, I’ll reinstall HexOS.

  21. For completeness, at least in Australia, the remote UI is very slow, which is another reason for this. I understand a remote-hosted server will always be necessary for some of the niceties of "just works" (HTTPS certificates/Servers through firewalls). But it would be good if it could hand off in some cases to a peer connection, like with WebRTC ICE.

  23. yes Kinda sorta. adding a m.2 ssd as L2ARC will automatically cache. the most used files and speed up the performance when reading them. A special VDEV will also speed up the entire ssd to a certain degree especially when you have thousands of folders with thousands of files in them like what i'd expect from database workloads. However its not actually tiered behavior

  25. Could this be linked to reinstall vs reclaim? Those cases which I noticed which wiped the drives were all reinstalls of Hexos as in this case. Other cases w/o data loss were reclaims of an existing installation. I didn't look into every single case, but this was a pattern I noticed.

  30. I truly relate to this. It's when the magic happens. It looks like you've been having a really good time creating unique builds and finding ways to leverage the devices and at a relatively low cost as well! This is great stuff!

  31. I would like to show some pictures of the older case also, since they are both very stylish. This case has a bottom part where you put the Pi, then you put the top part above 😉 That’s why it looks a bit so-so in the pictures - the top part is not properly set. If I hadn’t found a wood case for the Pi I would(!) have chosen this Akasa aluminium case: https://akasa.co.uk/update.php?tpl=product/product.detail.tpl&type=CHASSIS%20POWER&type_sub=FANLESS%20CASES&model=A-RA13-M2B Thiis isn’t about HexOS, I know, but either of my use cases could work like partners to my HexOS PocketNAS.

  32. The previous owner (who had the house custom built) just had a deep freeze in there; not sure why he wanted the vent, but I appreciate his attention to quality, detail, and versatility in his design choices. Was hoping to find someone I could buddy backup my PC image with; I'm sure we can help each other out.

  33. It makes sense, will think about it. Also I want to have a raid of max 4 disks, and if I need to expand, just do a second (HDD) RAID with new disks which I can then expand the system by swapping the disks in the future. So if I would have 4x 8TB, will swap the 8 TB disks with 20 TB in the future (example), that way I don't need to swap *all* disks at once, but can just do a few at the same time, while keeping my hardware (and software) the same.

  34. If you haven't already i'd definitely check out serverpartdeals.com. Got 4 Exos drives from them and like others said cheaper per TB than Iron wolfs. and even with shipping International, in my case UK, still comes out cheaper.

  35. Not especially which is why I posted the question. Was hoping a few folks would chime in about new devices being considered. Glad I posted the question as there is really good feedback! Please share the link to the wooden case - that'd be cool to see.

  36. I tried to keep to a similar budget and made the build i would rather have for the price. https://nl.pcpartpicker.com/list/Wb3wZc cpu: 12700k - cheapest cpu with intel uhd 770 igpu Mobo: asus something or other - has intel nic so theoritcally shouldn't cause you trouble and i like asus motherboards ram: gskill 64gb 5200mhz cl36 - slightly cheaper ram that is slightly faster and personally i like gskill ram, its the only brand i purchase ram from anymore cooler: thermalright peerless assassin 90 - its cheaper, should still fit in case and a reoccuring theme here, i like thermalright coolers os drive - cheaper ssd - its as big as you need, significantly cheaper, from a trusted brand and for fun i made it a triple mirror storage drive- 24tb exos, i like going with big drives and there are 4 of them because we can lol psu: went for a cheaper 750w psu because you have no need for a 850w even at max capacity, we could go even smaller but this one is very efficient edit: seems like i was typing this out before your newest post, so i'll look into it edit 2: i would say just take my list and adjust storage to your preferred budget you may even be able to find new exos drives for less on ebay but as i'm in a different part of the world than you its hard for me to check just make sure with any segate drives your purchase, regardless of how trusted the retailer is, you check the farm data to see if it actually is new.

  37. It's not so much new gear for me, but I'm looking for anything which maximises M.2 slots. I have never bothered to have or build a NAS before now, but the power available at this point is pretty amazing, so going all-flash seems key for me. I used to track how filesystems were going with tiered storage, as I planned slow spinning rust tier and a modest amount of SSD for fast tier. But these days I just don't see the need for HDDs in there, so tiered storage no longer seems necessary. I do like the idea of the Jonsbo N5 with water cooling though 🙂

  38. The deck shows my hexOS server as unavailable and won't connect. I can see the server is online, shares are up and running, and I can log into the trueNAS web ui directly. I did have tailscale on at first, but I have turned that off and tried everything short of restarting hexOS.

  39. Howdy ya'll, I'm pinormous. My interest in computers started back with RollerCoaster Tycoon, a game that could run on anything. I was soon puzzled why other games couldn't be played on my family computer, quickly learning that not all computers have the same capabilities. As my knowledge grew, I stumbled into the LimeWire era of data hoarding and never looked back. Over the next 7 years bigger hard drives were purchased then filled, external drives were acquired then subsequently filled, heard about Plex as a way to remotely access all my content, then I finally got serious about my addiction and bought an 8-bay NAS - giving me 34 TB of useable space. This will surely be enough, I told myself, there's no way I'll fill it up. 5 years later, I found out how much of a lie that was. So I'm now diving down a new rabbit hole of disk shelves and servers. If it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing; so I have a 28U rack that I'll be filling with networking, power management, and whatever else I can slap in there and explore. I have 2x24 bay shelves that, once populated, should net me around 900 TB of useable space. Surely, this will be enough space. There's no way I'll fill it up. I'm looking forward to the journey of learning new software and hardware that will enable this upgrade in the coming year, with HexOS hopefully making my first real move outside of Windows a simpler foray, leaving plenty of time to tinker more with networking. When I'm not learning-by-doing, I am frequently found playing factory or driving games. When I'm not off the clock, I travel the US as a longhaul truck driver (which piqued my interest after putting hundreds of hours in ATS and ETS2), so having my own personal Netflix is a real saving grace.

  40. I'm pretty sure this is incorrect please refer to this thread on reddit https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeServer/comments/18znvaa/ryzen_cpus_support_ecc_memory/ yup it is, you can refer to pcpartpicker and use it's ecc toggle to narrow down ecc compatible gear but you will more than likely have to find the motherboard 2nd hand as with everything its a cost vs safety preference on your end. Its kinda like asking do i need raid 6 or is raid 5 good enough. I might think raid 5 is good enough but you might think raid 6 is a must for safety. However for more in depth info to help you decide if you need ecc feel free to refer to this following post. https://www.reddit.com/r/truenas/comments/10sr1zv/comment/j7394el/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

  41. You can do it now through the TrueNAS console itself (not HexOS Deck). I just configured one this morning for Dropbox. Once you login to the TrueNAS console itself, to to Data Protection and create a task for Cloud Sync Task. They have premade layouts for Backblaze

  42. If you are comfortable doing it from the TrueNAS side, it’s really not all that hard, even for a beginner. I have an NVIDIA card, and what I did was: 1. Open the TrueNAS webpage. 2. On the left side of the page, click "Apps". 3. Find your Plex application and select (click) it. 4. Find and click the "Edit" button next to "Application Info" on the right. 5. Scroll down to the very bottom of the screen. There you should find "GPU Configuration". 6. If you see your specific card, check the box next to it, then click "Update”. If you do not see your specific NVIDIA card, you may have to enable the NVIDIA drivers. This can be done by: 1. Going to the Apps section. 2. Click "Configuration" then "Settings”. 3. Make sure the "Install NVIDIA Drivers" box is checked if it’s not. Then after enabling the NVIDIA drivers, you should be able to continue to step 4.

  45. YES! i'm really new to this stuff and this information is exactly what i was looking for. Thank you so much for sharing!

  46. I second this, I don't hate that hexos trips out and alerts me to an unsecure drive state when I add single drive vdevs but since I had to do so in the truenas UI I clearly know enough to be able to do so, so perhaps these warnings are unnecessary as Im likely fully aware of the risks... For my specific application, I really am not interested in redundancy at all, at least not with this operating system, I have several servers deployed in my homelab with close to a petabyte of teared storage solutions were I have plenty of redundant targets and also an offsite hyper compressed archive of the vitals and also cloud targets for configs and documents were it makes a ton of sense to use expensive cloud storage... My needs for hexos is to have an easily deployed on commodity hardware hybrid open target for samba filesharing and app hosting for everyone else that I don't necessarily want to provision privileges to very very expensive resources already in place and I will also use it myself for personal use were I may want to share that space with these other people, like media and games and other files and I can escelate the backup of that shared target to a secure archive in my more enterprise setup... No I want to be able to deploy a low cost mini itx system that only has 4 3.5in HDDs and a single 2.5in sata SSD and 2 m.2 nvme targets were ill have approximately 64TB of space with the 3.5s and a 4tb sata SSD and 2 2tb nvme targets all on a low cost AliExpress special itx motherboard that has 10gb copper via AQC113 Ethernet nic and dual 2.5gb nics via Intel i226 and a basic but sufficient for the application Intel n100 chip were I have enough bandwidth to 2 nvme SSDs to act as a high speed target for que and a semi fast sata SSD for split partitioning for slog and meta and extra cache to supplement the 32gb(the board only has a single DDR5 slot and is limited to 32gb at 4800mhz) of RAM that is primarily leverage as a write cache and also some scratch space for small file muiti user access like document sharing and also space for application folders and any requisite files needed for any VM we may want to tinker with collectively and also the hexos install with be on a small 256gb sata SSD because it is only used for the base install... I'm ok with a little capacity loss by using a raidz2( I think it's called raidz2 for a 3+1 vdev) for some peace of mind that if I lose one of the 16tb drives due to failure I can replace it and rebuild the target in case catastrophe happens between the failure before the scheduled rsync opp but that only for the 3.5in HDDs I don't need any redundancy for any of the solid state targets and I'd like to not be screamed at by the command deck when it detects that there are single device vdevs in the configs and just makes them unaccessible all together so here's hoping this is remediated fairly quickly as again I understand the risks, I don't need any handholding and if I lose data due to my own carelessness that is on my and a risk I was willing to take otherwise I wouldn't have configured it that way deliberately in the harder to use truenas UI... Just sayin
