Problem statement: Experiencing what I believe to be "transcoding lag" via Plex using a new NAS.

Old NAS - Netgear ReadyNAS quad-core ARM processor w/ 2GB RAM streamed 5Ghz wirelessly via direct connect to router using 1GB NIC.

New NAS - Aoostar WTR PRO Intel N100 w/ 32GB RAM streamed 5GHz wirelessly via direct connect to router using 2.5GB NIC.

Old NAS streamed via DLNA with zero issues streaming both 1080p and 4k 10bit HDR content in mostly x256 .mkv files.

New system experiences the transcoding lag (visual glitching on the screen) about ~20% of the content I attempt to stream. i can't seem to correlate content to trancoding lag - meaning one directory with x264 .mkv will lag but not another similarly spec'd file. Same with x265 .mkv - one folder works, another does not.

I suspect this is Plex attempting to transcode my media and I have attempted to force "direct play" both at the app and the server as i know my TV can handle the content (same content streamed via DLNA via the previous NAS), but I am missing something.

	What am I missing?

	Thank you!!!

If have just seen some news about the a big refresh of the Synology line up. (We can discuss about how big big is 🙂).
https://nascompares.com/2025/03/13/synology-ds525-ds1525-ds425-ds1825-and-more-revealed/

To be honest, I think it is in general not a exciting refresh. Synology was always more famous for the software as for the hardware. But introducing 2,5gbe in 2025 is already odd, they seem to sacrafice the 10 gbe upgrade option (TBC). This looks really strange to me. And the CPU upgrade is also not a major step. It looks like they are still pretty confident and not afraid for competition.

I see a lot of new NAS vendors entering the market with great hardware specs. And there is also great NAS software available. Of course HexOs is not there yet, but looks very promissing. But e.g. a brand as Ugreen in also investing heavely in the software. I had expect a stonger answer of Synology, but perhaps they are not so interested in home / SoHo space anymore.

What do you think? Looking forward to hear your opinion.
Just frustrated everything I want to hangs on HexOS getting to a point I can use it as a "prod" environment as well as more apps. I have a small movie/Anime collection I want to port over to the hexOS drives. I could probably do it now since it sounds like we can hook up existing pools? But the app I want to use JellyFin is far too complicated for me to figure out via TrueNAS I don't have the patience to figure out what to do Mainly I don't want to have to configure every little thing. The same goes for ROMM and Steam Headless. I want it to house backups of my ROMMs and my Steam Games so that when I want to downlaod them I can without using bandwidth. I'm using an old Gaming computer as my server (i7 2600k w/ a XFX 290x and 20GB ram 😎 lol) so I can play some games still. Oh the reason I want to slow down on my bandwidth usage because we have multiple people who work from home, and some months I almost reach my data cap. 🥲 But remember the ISPs said "Customers like data caps F* OFF)

But the other reason is I also want to move entirely away from windows if I can since I've had enough of them. But to do that I would like all 3 of my computers to sync and I want them to sync locally to HexOS. 😔 So before I move my GPD Win4 to Bazzite I need 🤨 to be able to sync all my data over from the Win4 (which has all my ROMs), And then transition that to Bazzite, and then once that is done I'll be moving my desktop to Bazzite too but the longer I wait on the desktop the better, cause I was dumb and have a 3070 in it.

So yeah I just can't wait until HexOS finally says "we're making it official" and "look we have more than 2 apps have fun!"

I have had a plan to build my own NAS for some time now (go figurers 🙃), but I have waited until I would get my new router from my new ISP to see how much space I will have left in my cabinet to build on. And now when I have got it I can without a doubt say that it is worse then my old one, so now I what to build a router as well! 🙌
I have built computers for personal use before, but nothing like a NAS or a router. But I do like to tinker (Home Assistant ❤️, which current flickers some of my lamp bulbs due to main-bulbs can't get a good connection to said router), but since this computer literary will be on the edge to the internet I want the security to be tight.

I know that VMs is not currently supported, but my idea is currently to run pfSense in a VM (if it's not already an app) and route WAN through it.

	Cabinet space
Depth: 115-140 mm (~25 mm is a cut out for the fiber-box that can't be moved, but is located in one corner)
Width: 445-575 mm (~130 mm is the fiber-box)
Height: 335-365 mm (~30 mm is the fiber-box)

	Case wishes

 Support disk hot swap.
Not really needed, but would be cool. It will probably be easier to just disconnect it and take it out of the cabinet. And the reason for having hot swap is then lost by that point.

I have seen Minisforum's MS-01, but one OS disk and two mirrored disk does not really entices me.
ASUSTOR Flashstor (Gen1) seems cool, but does not have any wifi (for the router), but that could maybe be added with USB? Or by placing a switch/AP on the case's "LAN-port".
I haven't found any ATX/ITX case (at least that I have chosen to remember), but that would be the preferred option, so the hardware can be updated without buying an entire new system.

	Hi everyone!

I wanted to create this thread as a friendly space where we can all introduce ourselves and get to know each other better. Whether you’re new to the community or you’ve been here for a while, feel free to stop by and tell us a little about yourself—your hobbies, interests, or anything you’d like to share.

I’ll go first to kick things off:

	Hi, I’m Stefano 🙂

I’m a tech enthusiast and a bit of a nerd. I absolutely love exploring new technologies and working with Linux, especially when it comes to configuring servers. Experimenting with different setups and solving technical challenges are some of the things I enjoy the most.

Outside of tech, music plays a huge role in my life. I’m a big fan of jazz and R&B for their smooth and soulful vibes, and I also love metal for its raw energy and power. My taste is pretty eclectic, and I enjoy discovering new artists and sounds.

I’m always curious and eager to learn, whether it’s about technology, music, or something completely new. I’m looking forward to meeting all of you and hearing your stories—so don’t be shy! Jump in and introduce yourself.

Now it’s your turn! Feel free to share as much or as little as you’d like. We’re all here to connect and learn from each other.

	Welcome aboard!

I was reading THIS arsTECHNICA article on ZFS (as one usually does) and was so impressed that I started looking at other stuff the author has worked on.

Turns out THIS guy created a ZFS snapshot application that looks really promising. I've not done anything other than look through the repo but I like what I see so far and wanted to share.

While not totally on topic to that thread, it made me remember that I should share this content.

Hoping to get some guidance regarding my Plex DLNA settings. I've enabled it, and reset Plex, but it doesn't appear to be broadcasting it across my network; by that I mean that apps like HEOS, VLC or 8Player are able to detect it.

Would appreciate any insight or assistance here! Thanks in advance!

So I run several computers , 3 of them are older Apple computers a 2011 mac min, 2012 5,1 mac pro and a 2013 trashcan (6,1). running opencore. When running Sequoia you cant use a chrome based browser. That means you stuck with Safari or Firefox. I don't like all the bloat in both. Yesterday a found a new browser call Zen Browser and it really does rock. Good features and really lean. Check it out. Oh I also have my xserve 3,1 its running ESXI right now going to try and put proxmox on it.
