I am now looking to host a couple of game servers, such as Minecraft, Valheim, Palworld, etc.

I over-built the PC I have HexOS running on, so I'm wondering if it's possible to run a VM from HexOS, so that I can host these games without needing another PC?
I tried searching the forum, but wasn't able to find anything in this realm.

I didn’t use apps because I wanted to write my own docker compose files so that I could have a bit more control (I run some of my apps in different vlans, so I used macvlan networks in docker). I also run my own OPNSense router and Unifi access points.

From what I know of HexOS, the above probably generally says HexOS wasn’t made for me. If not that, the fact that my day job is as a DevOps engineer probably does.

BUT, I’m not just looking for drop-in replacement of my current setup, and I may be willing to simplify a bit. I’m struggling to find the time to maintain my current setup. Nextcloud-aio, HomeAssistantOS, and OPNSense update themselves (at the click of a button), but beyond that, I’m still running TrueNAS 24.10 because I haven’t had the time to deal with all the changes to VMs and apps since that version, and it’s not exposed to the internet at all (not even Nextcloud), so it’s not been a high priority. I’ve come to realize that while I love to tinker, there’s a lot of value in “it just works without having to think about it”.

I’m also concerned about the bus factor with my current setup. If something were to happen to me, my wife and my entire family would be hopelessly out of their depth trying to deal with this system in it’s current form. The only viable path forward would be for them to abandon everything and go running back to Apple or Google or Microsoft (probably the first one). Basically all the files of any value are in Nextcloud, so my wife could at least figure out how to download them, but I’d rather she be able to keep using it if it was easy enough to maintain.

So with all of that said, is HexOS for me, or am I going to find myself limited and frustrated (or constantly dropping into the TrueNAS UI), without being all that better off in terms of bus factor anyway?

How do I do this please

I setup a homeserver a few years ago that is currently held together by good vibes and duct-tape. I want to make something more streamlined and better organized than whatever it is I have going on now.

I am currently running windows 11 with an ubuntu VM that handles all my docker containers. I was curious if I could just run HexOS and use it's on app store to more or less recreate my environment. I have listed the services I use below along with the specs of the PC (the drives are setup super weirdly I know) Thanks! 🙂

PC Specs:

 CPU: i7-9700k

GPU: nvidia 3080

RAM: 64gb DDR4

Storage:

2x 500GB SSD drives (one for the operating system and one for a backup)

1x 6TB SATA (first drive I got for setting up media still holds some movies and TV shows)

1x 20TB SATA (Media, tv, movies etc)

2x 8TB SATA that are currently configured in a RAID0 I know this is weird I was learning and never raided a drive before (More media)

Services:

Windows: .Arr stack (Radarr, Sonarr, Prowlarr), OMBI, NZBget, qbitorrent, RustDesk, Scaletail and Tantualli 

Link/Docker Containers: Portainer, Adguard Home, Karakeep, Homepage

I've already backedup all my configs and wiping all the media off my drives isn't a big issue since there is nothing important on them. Any help of advice would be appreciated. 

I've replaced the power supply, I've tried reading logs and didn't find anything. I've turned on and off XMP. This is driving me crazy

I was wondering if there's a way to access my files (documents, and etc) on my phone remotely (I'm using a Pixel 9)? In that same topic, is there a way I can access my files on my laptop remotely as well? I have tailscale installed, but don't know what to do next to access my files on my laptop.

All I want to do is have a storage server for all my video work and general backups, but I have poor internet at my parents house and want to avoid a network bottleneck as much as possible in the meantime. It seems on typical NAS units it is possible to connect directly into a device via ethernet using it's IP address, but is this possible to achieve on a DIY NAS through HexOS?

Was considering HexOS because it seemed easy to use for a noob like me with minimal compromise and the ability to expand my storage capacity fairly easily, but bouldn't find anything regarding whether it's even possible to do a direct ethernet connection from desktop to desktop.

How is this supposed to work? Or does this just allow me to have 2 server in my one account?

I'm ready now to give it a try and turns out I never received a confirmation mail and the account credentials I stored in my Password Vault are not accepted (Hub and Deck). I checked my creditcard and I did pay the 99  USD at the time. 

The email I used at the time is the same as I used to create the account I'm posting with.

I'm truly sorry to be bringing you all a barely-HexOS related problem, but I come begging for help from the people who likely know best--NAS owners, Self-Host Enthusiasts, and the HexOS team themselves--with my proverbial heart in my hands. I'm at the point where I am truly frustrated and I just need to ask in case anyone has the magic solution for me (and I will owe you big time if you do!)

Mods, I more than understand if this isn't relevant and you're welcome to remove this, and I apologise for wasting anyone's time. 

Here's the story. I'm upgrading from a HP Microserver (circa 2010) with no special upgrades; mainboard, SATA bays, TrueNAS CORE. Over time, the TrueNAS system locks up, and, while it works, I can't access or log into it at all - the login page just gives me "incorrect username/password" and I have to force power-cycle the thing. That's fine; I've wanted to upgrade for a while and found a good deal on a fully-kitted HPE Microserver G8 (with iLO - perfect!) from an enthusiast. HBA card, integrated RAID controller, 4-bay SATA, iLO, Xeon CPU, all the mods to make Disk 5 work for bootable media.

I have had nothing but problems in migrating. Wanting to get off of old CORE (iX are discontinuing it, plus, doing moronic things like removing native SMART data...) to HexOS and SCALE, and since I have an EA backer license wasting away, I figured, no worries, I'll install HexOS and migrate the disks. I plugged in an SSD, installed HexOS, claimed the server, happy as. I backed up all the data a second time just in case and moved the disks across (4x4TB WD Reds, FWIW.) No disks in HexOS/SCALE interface. Alright... Probably RAID - it used to be software RAID handled by CORE, this thing has the B120i. That's fine. Go into HP SSA - no disks, only bay 5. WTF?

Skip a lot of time and headaching and I realise the backplane is connected to the PCIe RAID controller (LSI 9261-8i) not the board (should have realised that, I know. I'm new to HBA RAID beyond just SW raid on Windows and CORE.) I... can't work out how to use the RAID card, it doesn't use a GUI, so it's all magic unknown CLI nonsense (to me, at least). Also, with some painstaking searching - it looks like LSI RAID cards need to be put into HBA mode for SCALE to control the RAID, but, SCALE doesn't support the card in HBA mode. Okay - fine. F*ck the RAID card - I disable it in BIOS and go back to the B120i. At this point I'm content with the RAID controller potentially losing me my data during RAID config. I screw around with boot modes about 18 times and finally get the drives to show up in HP SSA. Hoo-freaking-ray. Set up RAID, off we go to boot HexOS and install and get my goddamn NAS back up and running. 

And now we're up to NOW. With the drives in, I get the below: 

And with the drives OUT, I get this!

So I can't use the RAID controller, I maybe can't use the B120i, and it almost feels like I can't use HexOS either. Argh! I am lost! I feel like I'm destined not to have a nas with any form of modern features! No iLO, no RAID controller, no damn apps, just my buggy old CORE interface on a nearing-20 year old box. 

So, for at least just the sake of your understanding of my current mindset, I plead for any help anyone might have for me. I wrote this a little tongue-in-cheek-humoured, but honestly, I'm so damn angry at this whole process (not HexOS, as I said, but the whole thing; HP, SSA, the B120i, the LSI card, the iLO, the NAS, CORE, SCALE, HexOS, you name it, I'm just soured on the whole lot, meanwhile my NAS is down and my hopes of a simple home freaking media server are shrivelling up.)

I’m one of the happy lifetime license holders for HexOS, and overall, I’m really excited about where the project is headed. But there’s one thing I’m worried about: long-term sustainability.

I get that selling lifetime licenses is great for upfront cash flow, but how do you plan to keep the project financially healthy in 5 or 10 years? Honestly, it reminds me a bit of what is happening with Plex, and that’s kind of worrying. For the same reason, I’ll never buy services like pCloud with “lifetime” storage.

I assume you have a strategy for this—maybe optional subscription services (like cloud backup, premium/enterprise support, etc.). Could you share a bit about it? Are you confident that these income streams will be enough? Even though I’ve already paid for my license, this actually affects my decision about whether to start my main server on HexOS. Long-term viability matters more to me than the initial cost, to be honest.

I’m not trying to be critical—just looking for some clarity to feel more confident about the future.

I hope this message finds you well. I'm writing regarding my recent HexOS purchase, which I bought as an early access product expecting simplified TrueNAS management. 

Unfortunately, I've encountered challenges that have led me to request a refund, and I need your help disabling the service.

What I Experienced

After claiming my server

1. Unexpected Network & disk: With no backup configured, I saw sustained ~900Mbps outbound traffic to link.storjshare.io and api.hexos.com via the wsocat WebSocket tunnel (PID 17377, 1MB buffers). This matched high disk reads from my media vault.

2. Difficult to Control: Killing wsocat stops it temporarily, but it restarts. midclt call service.stop "hexos-agent" fails (service not found). No clear GUI toggle exists.

3. Dashboard Dependency: Blocking the tunnel (with my firewall) eliminates uploads but breaks HexOS Deck access ("Server not available"). - Even removing the server from the HexOS cloud service does not stop this data transfer.

4. Unexpected Cloud Service Lock in: I didn't expect to be required to rely on your cloud service to maintain my own server, this goes against self hosted as a concept..

Why HexOS Isn't Valuable for Me

Honestly, I don't see much value in continuing with HexOS for the price I paid:

• Limited Features: The cloud dashboard and "simplified" management haven't demonstrated significant improvements over stock TrueNAS Scale.

• Early Access Concerns: I purchased during early access expecting rapid progress, but haven't seen meaningful updates or enhancements that justify the cost.

• Misleading Expectations: The aggressive cloud sync behavior felt like data exfiltration rather than helpful management, without clear opt-out options or bandwidth controls.

I feel somewhat misled by the early access promise—I expected a product evolving toward clear value, but the core issues (uncontrollable uploads, poor disable process) persist.

My Requests

1. Full Refund: I'd like to return to standalone TrueNAS Scale.

2. Official Disable Instructions: Step-by-step process to permanently remove the HexOS overlay/tunnel without data loss or reinstall.

3. Data Confirmation: What was uploaded during the sync? (Metadata only? Full files from my media vault?) And can you confirm/delete any stored data?

Thank you for understanding my position. I wanted HexOS to work but ultimately find it doesn't meet my needs. Your assistance with the refund and clean uninstall would be greatly appreciated.

I want to buy a new Sata SSD in a different size (500G probably).

Is it a matter of shutting down the server,
Removing the drive
using something like Crucial software to copy the contents over
and refitting the new drive?

i started using this over the holliday since december 19th and find it fun but i dont have time or the spare hardware to run it. i wolud like a refund. 

it seems like a great product, but its still a bit to hard for my taste. i will be following the development and probably looking in to it at a later date.

I just completed a fresh install of HexOS on a UGREEN DXP4800 Plus, and I’m running into repeated, seemingly random reboots.

System specs:

• Intel Pentium Gold 8505 (5-core)

• 8 GB DDR5 RAM

• Built-in 128 GB SSD (used for the HexOS system install)

• 4 × 12 TB HDDs (data drives)

The installation itself appeared to complete successfully. The system boots and reaches the Console Setup screen (the menu with options 1–10), and it is assigned an IP address.

I’m able to access the web UI from my PC via https://deck.hexos.com, but after a short period the connection drops and I see a “server not available” / disconnected page. When I check the NAS physically, it appears to have rebooted on its own and is back at the Console Setup screen again.

This cycle keeps repeating: boot → console menu → brief web access → reboot.

At this point I’m not sure whether this is a hardware issue, a configuration problem, or something specific to the DXP4800 Plus platform. Any guidance on logs to check, settings to change, or known issues would be greatly appreciated.
