Mobius started following Need to vent about HexOS and waiting! and NAS no longer accessible.. but I can't remove it.
-
My NAS has been having issues so I decided to re-install it, However, since I couldn't get into the GUI to remove it form my HexOS account, it's just there still, and I can't add the new one to my account since I only have 1 key. How do I delete this one off my account if I can't access it? edit: sorry I wasn't paying attention to which topic I made this in.

So don't know when it actual happened but today i was able to create a pool with one 500gb SSD that I am using for all my ISO files and it seem to be working great just upload about 60 ISO on there a few minutes ago. Keep up the good work. I would rater wait on proven CODE that have issues that I think its all my fault AH!!! P.S. I have not been around much for the last two months, wife has been in an out of hospital but I am back now.

Downgrading the bootdrive, hexos re-installation, what happens to the array?
Conky replied to Tasche's question in OS & Features
My understanding is even if you just did a fresh install of hexOS truenas should detect the existing pool(s) and import them, i dont know if the hexos interface will do this or if you need to go into truenas, but you shouldnt lose your data even in the event of a boot drive failure. but also I'm a complete know nothing novice so dont take what i say as gospel. -

i was able to mount 6 - 2.5" drives where jonsbo only recommended 4 In the product images for the n5 case they show 2.5" drives being mounted with the long side horizontally i ended up mounting them with the long side vertically and having the connectors on the bottom of the case. it was definitely a tight fight for sure and while i was able to get it to work with standard non angled cables, i will highly recommend left angle sata cables like the ones included in the image below. The other issue i had was that i ran out of screws for the ssd mounting. i think jonsbo gave enough for 5 ssds (the 4 they intended you to mount and 1 more incase you lose screws) At first the only screws i could find freely slid left and right on the mounting rails without me even noticing. I can imagine if i didn't notice the klinking and clanging it would inevitably cause would drive me nuts. Eventually i found 2 screws that worked perfectly in my stash of screws from the various pc cases i have bought. My 7th 2.5" ssd got the short end of the stick and was vhb taped to an empty area. the power supply situation gave me so many headaches. I couldn't decide between an 850w or a 1000w psu. pcpart picker estimated my wattage above 850w but my math didn't match theirs i couldn't find a lot of what was available on the best psu list the ones i could find didnt have enough sata power ports I also did not want to use molex to sata adapters or vice versa for risk of fire or damaging components chatpt essentially told me it was a bad idea eventually i was enticed by a psu not on the list but i guess a step up from one that did decently on the list The Super Flower LEADEX VII Platinum PRO 850 W which had a TWELVE sata power ports. i was torn between the 850w and the 1000w versions of that psu and the prices were only $10 apart when i first looked. they both even came with super flower's high performance megacool fans (that are as loud as jet engines) when it was finally time to bite the bullet the 850w psu price dropped by another $20-30 and the bonus fans that came with the 1000w changed to something that was less desirable to me. The reduced price, more desirable fans and my own math showing 850w was enough to convince me to get the the 850w psu. A cool feature that i previously thought was a gimmick is that on the psu end almost every connection uses a universal plug. This lets your buy more sata power cables in case you want use the psu in a case that can fit even more hdds. A psu with enough sata power connections was only one of my problems, another was that my sata cables were too short. even with creative routing of cables i just was not able to connect 2 of my sata power cables. i reluctantly had to purchase sata cable extensions. in hindsight i could have just bought 1 or 2 more of the universal sata cables and route them where i need them but i was near the end of my build and really didn't want to pull out the psu again. Also finding the right cables would be a risk too if done wrong. Im sure i have more to comment on but these days no time to sleep or think with the overtime shifts this darn server forced me to take ๐ next part to come eventually

Need to vent about HexOS and waiting!
Mobius replied to FangerZero's topic in Coffee Talk (Off-Topic)
in a blog post they said jellyfin is coming in q3 and in an earlier blog post templates were also mentioned as coming in q3 unfortunately i am not aware of the status of this. However if these had to be delayed then there would be communication. for example vm support was delayed and it was mentioned in the blog post and we were given a reason why the team chose to delay it (truenas scale decided to change to a new vm system and the team decided to wait for that instead) I don't think we have to worry about that. The team expectations were wildly blown away with the community support. There was also no venture capital funding sought out by the team. The team is most definitely aware of the frustration and have been working to improve. There has been more communication than before and they are working to better incorporate community feedback. think of this as a step in the right direction in asking what the community wants. i would not be surprised at all if we start to get more substantial things to vote on in the future. you are free to ask for clarification in the forms and im sure the team would try their best to clarify - Yesterday

Aah, I see what's happening. in my editor it's actually 3 lines, and not explaining that the 4 drives are in one raid. It mainly mentions that they are Mirrors for the SSD and nvme. Let me adjust it a bit more so the formatting is a bit more on what I expected.
-
Mirror: you have 2 drives, the data is stored in those 2 drives, they are exact replications of one another and you can lose 1 drive, you have the capacity of 1 drive. RaidZ1: you have at least 3 drives and data is stored on multiple drives, while 1 drive is being used for parity. You can lose 1 drive and have the capacity of all drives combined -1 drive RaidZ2/3: Similar to RaidZ1, but you can lose 2/3 drives and your capacity is that of all drives -2/3 drives Stripped: You have only 1 drive and if it dies everything is gone.
-
Adjusted, thanks. can you explain what's the difference that makes one a Mirror, and the other a RAID Z1?

Need to vent about HexOS and waiting!
Todd Miller replied to FangerZero's topic in Coffee Talk (Off-Topic)
Were dates given for either of those things? If not it proves FangerZero's point and seem to justify their frustration. Is either Jellyfin or Templates in testing? If not then neither would seem to be ready by HexOS 1.0. And while I am on that subject, I haven't seen or heard any discussion on when that go live date would be. It would seem that if that were within a couple months we would have heard something and be finalizing our hardware purchases to be ready. For me HexOS is already prod. I wanted a simple NAS and when I heard LTT talking about his investment and requirements I thought I finally had what I was looking for. Yeah Plex is neat and Immich is cool and I'm near 60 so I really talk like that. The only way this ends badly is the company goes under before the local UI is created. If you don't see the frustration of your community regardless if it's a bug in HexOS, TrueNAS or the app being run, well then you have a much larger issue on your hands than whether the switches should be to the right or left of the descriptor text. Yes it's a beta test. Yes we knew that going in. But also "yes, this is coming or that is coming and we are also working on a new file system" is just more vagueness in an already vague picture as far as we know. -

Did they ever say they would have more than two apps or just that there would be a template if someone wanted to add more apps? -
Thanks!!! This was a absolute life saver, I have no experience with TrueNAS apart from through HEX and my boot drive failed. This guide was perfect for getting everything up and running again as if nothing ever went wrong.

slight correction Im glad you got everything sorted, i just remade my server and well i can relate so much to your experience

Just frustrated everything I want to hangs on HexOS getting to a point I can use it as a "prod" environment as well as more apps. I have a small movie/Anime collection I want to port over to the hexOS drives. I could probably do it now since it sounds like we can hook up existing pools? But the app I want to use JellyFin is far too complicated for me to figure out via TrueNAS I don't have the patience to figure out what to do Mainly I don't want to have to configure every little thing. The same goes for ROMM and Steam Headless. I want it to house backups of my ROMMs and my Steam Games so that when I want to downlaod them I can without using bandwidth. I'm using an old Gaming computer as my server (i7 2600k w/ a XFX 290x and 20GB ram ๐ lol) so I can play some games still. Oh the reason I want to slow down on my bandwidth usage because we have multiple people who work from home, and some months I almost reach my data cap. ๐ฅฒ But remember the ISPs said "Customers like data caps F* OFF) But the other reason is I also want to move entirely away from windows if I can since I've had enough of them. But to do that I would like all 3 of my computers to sync and I want them to sync locally to HexOS. ๐ So before I move my GPD Win4 to Bazzite I need ๐คจ to be able to sync all my data over from the Win4 (which has all my ROMs), And then transition that to Bazzite, and then once that is done I'll be moving my desktop to Bazzite too but the longer I wait on the desktop the better, cause I was dumb and have a 3070 in it. So yeah I just can't wait until HexOS finally says "we're making it official" and "look we have more than 2 apps have fun!"

I have an issue where I cant claim my hexOS server.

This should help -
And it got published with the review. https://nl.pcpartpicker.com/b/dHBj4D I would like to know what you all think about it as well, so love to hear everyone's opinion about it!

Not fully correct. Yes SMB protocol is used by Windows, but it is a protocol that's working on Windows, Linux, MacOS (and possibly others). NFS is a different protocol, which was mainly used on Linux as a sharing system, I don't know the exact details on why what is "better", or the history, but it simply put is: a different piece of software and protocol. For compatibility SMB is used, since it's generally more adopted and almost every system is using it (Think about games. Most games work on Windows, not all of them work on Linux or MacOS, but some of them also only work on Linux or MacOS and not on Windows) Plex can be currently installed through the HexOS platform, *other* software cannot, and you need to use the TrueNAS system. You repeated Plex here, so I think you wanted to mention a different piece of software? The interpretation is partly correct. You can install it on the system, however you need to use the TrueNAS interface for this. HexOS will be able to start & stop the software from the interface. So technically you can install it on HexOS, just not "through HexOS". All this said, if you want to use a bit more advanced configuration, you will currently need to use TrueNAS for the settings, but if you just want one system with everything, you can just do this.

So, in the end I have the Dell HBA330, and have written a small guide what I did on PCPartpicker, but that's currently waiting moderation. Once it's published I will post the link here, also for people to see if they also want to build it. Thanks again everyone who has helped here!

Hi all. My $.02 is that there should be a way to echo or display the TrueNAS errors from within the HexOS management GUI. Basically, I have been trying to apply the new update(s) to my system, and it took me forever to realize that they were failing because I didn't assign enough space to my boot drive to download and unpack the update contents.

Why we NEED local config access, eventually.
teknophile replied to Duhmez's topic in Roadmap & Feature Requests
Personally, I'd vastly prefer that there was ONLY a local interface, and no centralized remote access to everyone's personal data. A remote interface can certainly be useful, but that isn't too difficult or technical to setup with something like tailscale. While I'm sure the HexOS team takes security and privacy very serious, imagine if there was ever a data breech at hexos that gave hackers/bad actors a list of all the home servers they could target, or worse a direct backdoor. -

Please don't use an external USB enclosure, this is just asking for trouble, because very often they are not forwarding the drives serial number but are just giving a generic one, which means that Hexos cannot differentiate between drives and will not be able to create a pool or use those drives. Only stick with internal SATA ports and SATA expansion cards to avoid any trouble. A lot of people in here are using Jonsbo cases, which exists in various sizes to accommodate varying amount of drives. A couple of remarks to keep in mind: You need a dedicated drive just for the OS and you cannot use it for anything else. Don't waste a 1TB SSD on this, 16GB is all you need, so go for a low capacity one. With 2 drives Hexos will create a mirrored Pool which cannot be extended, if you want to extended your Pool later on you need 3 drives now to create a RaidZ1 which is extendable. If you go for the 2 drives now, 4 drives in total later, you will have 2 mirrored drives and only the capacity of 2 drives in total Stay away from SMR HDDs. If you decide to go custom built, please post your specs in here as there are some pitfalls which we can help you avoid. ๐

Beelink Me Mini - https://www.bee-link.com/products/beelink-me-mini-n150 Room for 6 M.2 slots. Attach an external USB-C 4-bay HDD enclosure to fill your HDD needs.

Hello I currently have an old 2x1TB NAS with regular network access and that's it. I want to get a new NAS with HexOS. I'm thinking about 2 drives for now, but 4 drives finally, so must have 4 HDD slots + SSD/m.2 slot(s). So for example 4x20TB HDD + 2x2TB m.2. I also want something that is small and not a normal size PC case. The question is if it's better to build something myself or just get a regular NAS from Asustor/Ugreen/something else. My main concern is future proofing. Will I have to replace it in 5 years or not if I get the regular NAS. Also also, if I DIY one with the drive requirements I have, will I be limited to a big case or are there some Mini PC cases that would work for me? The budget I have for the NAS (without drives) is 500 USD ish. Thanks for all the answers.! Cheers

My instance of Immich is doing the same thing after I upgraded to 24.10.2.3. I have the same error with the same logs displayed. What is weird is I am getting the same error and logs for my instance of ConvertX as well. Both of these error happened after upgrading from 24.10.2.2 to 24.10.2.3.
