Hello, Looks like I sort of messed up a bit when building my system. This is my first ever NAS, and I clearly didn't do my do diligence and got a 1TB SSD for my boot drive thinking I could easily use the rest as cache or something. Should I just bite the bullet and get a smaller SSD for OS and use the 1TB as cache or is there a smarter way to do things? Thank you!

I'm glad i didn't end up painting the case. That would have taken a while and no time. The case came in Thursday night and i worked on it for hours since i got it. I still don't even have the motherboard installed 😅 I've also spent a lot of time doing cable management and it still looks like a rat's nest 😅😅 My original plan to drill in mounting holes for the phanteks drive caddies is a bust too but my new plan is less elegant and more expensive 😅😅😅 I realized i had more free sata power and data slots so i bought more drives 😅😅😅😅 Hopefully by Monday or Tuesday i make a new update saying I'm 95% done. This iteration of my server is not going to complete until i can get a part 3d printed and 3d printing services are expensive. I'm reaching out to some friends to see if they have a 3d printer but I'm not hopeful. 😅😅😅😅😅

Hi, I have a similar issue. I installed HexOS completely new. A single Folder(also share) and set all the location to a path in the folder. I tried to install Immich but it just says that there is server error. In truenas, the app pool is set. I dont see any running jubs during installation. Can some one provide guidance on where i should look? Another note is that my folder is Private with access to one user. Also let me know if you need any other info.

as far as i know hexos cannot do that. i can see how that would be handy tho. yeah when you are new homelabs and servers its hard to find things just by virtue of the correct terminology being completely foreign for example im sure you if searched if hexos supports multiple storage pools (pool = group of drives), you would find your answer for the first question, but can't expect someone knew to know things like pool. but again im more than happy to help im sure there are users on this form that can attest to me answering the same questions dozens of times.

Amazing thank you! One more question. Does HexOS support directly linking a NAS PC via USB 3.2gen2 to another PC? I was thinking up upgrading my LAN switch and PCIE lan adapters to 10gigabit ports. But i only need 10 gigabit to my main editing PC, so i figure a direct USB 3.2gen2 to USB 3.2gen2 is probably the most cost efficient way of doing this. These must be basic questions, but I can't seem to find the answers anywhere.

I'm new to creating servers/NAS etc.. I am building a PC with 6 storage drivers in two configurations: a Raid 5 3x22TB storage nas (for storing my business video footage on) and a Raid 5 3x8TB server/storage NAS to run jellyfish or hold personal files/videos. Can I do that using HEXOS with only 1 license from the same machine? Probably a noob question. Thanks for your time!

I would like to see gluetun added that would be cool.

Currently own an '06 Chrysler 300c. Bone stock at the moment, but it's my next in queue project after getting my server rack up and running. Going to throw a blower on it and a matching brake job to slow the boat back down. I love the way it rides so I don't plan on doing any suspension work; it'll never be a track car, just want a daily that's a bit more fun.

It would be useful in the dashboard if I could see a snapshot of users connected to services like SMB, NFS.

if its media files you are torrenting, maybe something like gluetun + radarr/sonarr can do what you are asking for. or if you just want a torrenting app with a vpn attached you can do gluetun+torrenting app of choice or a fork of a client with vpn built in like this https://github.com/binhex/arch-qbittorrentvpn I havent used either or know how to set them up myself.

I had trouble at first when I set the external IP to the IP of Tailscale. What I forgot was my phones wifi connection wouldn't use my external IP so the app kept reporting a false fail as I was setting it up. I ended up having to turn off wifi and use my phone connection/data. Then because my phone connection uses my external IP without issue, it worked. The IP switcher on Imich is pretty touchy.

If you installed an early Beta version of this OS and upgraded to "25.04.1" or higher and unable to access HexOS dashboard etc? you may have some services that are broken login locally into truenas, go to the shell Fix: sudo python /usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/middlewared/scripts/vendor_service.py (reboot) Reboot and still broken? sudo systemctl restart websocat

Is there some way to use a VPN and torrent, automatically put it into a folder?

Are Locations doing anything under the hood?
freid replied to ChitoWarlock's question in OS & Features
Is there a listing of default folder names that the items in locations will match with? I'd like to create folders in my TrueNAS to match. -
Thank you! Working out great, immich app on my phone doesn't seem to work, but at least I can access the folders now!

Do you have a link to the guide? Tailscale seems good. I'm a bit in a similar sitaution to you :))

Tailscale or Wireguard as a VPN are the safest options. If you want a public domain, so that you can access it from any device, you first need a public domain and a reverse proxy (Nginx Proxy Manager, Traefik, Caddy). However this is pretty much a security risk without hardening, so you likely want to use cloudflare, a good firewall (ditch your ISP router and go for OpnSense or OpenWRT) and MMO Fail2Ban like Crowdsec. There are still other ways to secure your network (VLAN, DMZ etc.). VPN is the quickest with little setup, domain is the more versatile with a loooooot more setup to do to not risk your data.

Is off-site backup automatically "buddy-backup" ?
PsychoWards replied to driveaholic's topic in Other Questions
Hey, Yes you can use your old Synology NAS as the target for a backup, but you cannot install Hexos on it, it can only run the proprietary Synology OS on it. You still need a way to connect from your place to your parents house, this is in your case likely best done by setting up a VPN server (Wireguard or Tailscale) on your parents side. (either in the router or the NAS). Then you just need to setup a rsync task which is running periodically, you find a lot of guides out there on how to do this, for the time being you need to configure this in Truenas and not they Hexos dashboard. It's best to do the initial filling via the local network and only afterwards move the NAS to your parents place for the delta backups.
