My journey with hexos to JellyFin with Intel Transcoding π
Todd Miller replied to thomasmillergb's topic in Show & Tell
I've heard a lot about Jellyfin and am interested in hearing from folks who have used both recently. It seems to be on many folks list of what to work on next but since I have a lifetime Plex pass I am hesitant to take up new software that me be in an upcoming phase of this project like Plex and Imich are in the first phase. And because the world of NAS systems and software is not my speciality I want to hear more success stories before I upset the apple cart myself. Perhaps not the best approach for a beta testing effort but i'll pull my weight yet. Though I can't access Plex externally yet, it was very easy to load both my movies and episodic tv. I head to do a little renaming of the files but everything show up with the correct episode name and date. I have a few issues where the episode order doesn't match Ples or IMDB for that matter but those feel like a small price to pay for every DR Who episode from Eccleston through Whittaker to just work. If the Jellyfin install falls under the new template option it sounds like is coming next I may give it a go but I don't want to break HexOS because I couldn't wait and did something in TrueNAS. I am really in over my head there. As an aside, how did the PI5 work? I have a kit but haven't done anything with it yet? If it can run HexOS, that sounds like street cred and bragging rights. Ugh, I suppose the kids don't say it that way anymore. -
My setup is a bit of mix of new and old where i wanted hexos for the simple purpose of, i want to backup my **** and have easy access to them including my movies. The setup has room for growing i7 4gen + 16GB DDR3 ram (The old) 12TB x 3 IronWolf pros + Intel ARC A580 (The new) Ok What i learnt about HexOs Is it easy to setup 3 hardrives in a Z1 with having no previous experience? - Definitely and not only that the get me started guide and UI is very helpful Is it easy to setup my Folder SMB? - It was a breath of fresh air, however it would have been nice if there was an example of how to mount the SBM on linux so i can say instead my dec JellyFin Setup via TrueNas Ok this got a bit challenging as there are multiple steps to follow and requires going into truenas for the first time. The main bit which is so easy to miss is the following Jellyfin | TrueNAS Documentation Hub regarding setting up the storage. Passing the GPU through was as simple as checking the pass through option. (So nice no drivers were needed to install) JellyFin Transcoding Now all the JellyFin inital **** is now taken care of, diving into the unknown for me was how to setup transcoding. First the jellyfin docs are amazing Intel GPU | Jellyfin provding you love reading detail and every line. But long story short use The next question is how do i know i set this up, as i was initially disappointed with transcode types. First setup open up any video and do a wack screen size or set a custom bit limit. Open PlayBack Info Ok we can see some transcoding is happening. To verify its actually using the GPU my first thought was just to pull the GPU and then play the video again. Yay transcoding now fails Ok but what about usage, this is where i struggled, as TrueNas does not support GPU metrics π i thought maybe i could export the raw metrics, pump into my prometheus and grafana but no metrics. However there is light, if you open up the truenas console or ssh in (this is off be default) you can then run the following $sudo intel_gpu_top Sweet Now i am finally happy, where i have moved away from a pi5 under the stairs with 4 usb hardrives hanging out of it..

No I did not, I will try this tomorrow. Yes, latest update is installed, but I'm on the stable channel
-
Did you run the latest update. Perhaps thatβs make a difference.

Did you try without the splitter to see if that's the issue?
-
I tried 2 different power supplies and a power bank using the included usb c splitter, none of them worked π

I did also some tests. usb-c to usb-c cable with a Apple usb-c power supply works in my setup.
-
Which Power On/Off accessory are you looking for? Is it the DC Extension? --> It will not only control the power supply to another computer, but also supplies the JetKVM with 5V through the RJ 11 cable.
-
This does not seem to be universally true. I just tested mine with a usb-c to usb-c cable on three different power supplies, it powered up just fine in all three cases.
-
What absolutely annoys me the most is that it needs an USB-A to USB-C cable, USB-C to USB-C is not working for power delivery. π€¦ββοΈπ€¬

I was looking forward to seeing a 3D-printed external 4-bay HDD mount attached to the outside. :P -

MGK started following Can it replace DSM?

Most in the Synology world have had their world rocked by removing or limiting third party HHD support. As a long term Synology user who has better things to do with time than tinkering with TrueNAS or UnRaid and cares enough about data integrity and privacy to not go the Ugreen or Terramaster direction, there's really nothing else on the market but Qnap, meuh, and maybe HexOS. Too bad it's not ready for prime time yet. I'm watching it but I have to upgrade soon, if I buy another couple Synology boxes, I'm in for another 10 years or so. Can HexOS replace Synology DSM? Hyperbackup Snapshot and Replication Immutable Snapshot Drive encryption Folder encryption Detailed users permissions Certificates management External access VPN server / client Security Advisor 2FA USB Copy CMS File Station Antivirus Essential Hardware Power Task Scheduler External Access / QuickConnect Firewall Account brute force block SHR 1/2 equivalent Cloud Sync Space reclamation Deduplication It's a tall order, plus if it did not look like a Unix terminal it would not hurt. These functions are way more important than curated apps that can be manually installed in Docker. What can we expect from HexOS and when

Next post - does HexOS have a support probelm?
TheCamba replied to gingerling's topic in Show & Tell
What an entertaining read. Each post is full of ups and downs, drama and humor. Best of luck on your next adventure as it looks like you are diving into apps. Since you are sticking to the HexOS interface, you will only see Plex and Immich. Which one are you doing first? -
If Hex OS is touted as the accessible NAS platform, I think prioritizing services with broad appeal would make the most sense in order to attract more...everyday users; not just existing homelab users. Getting infrastructure setup for the following would be incredibly helpful and would probably help a large number of users. Audiobookshelf - Audiobook and ebook management. Calibre - ebook management. Plant-It - Plant maintenance and care reminders. Home Assistant - home automation. mealie.io - Recipe management. Jellyfin - FOSS Plex alternative. Actual Budget - personal finance management. Romm - Retro title management. Steam Headless - (This one is a stretch) a headless Steam streaming server.

I've only seen this one mentioned once in this thread, so I'm repeating it as an additional vote: Rustdesk server.

Hi Todd, In brief, yes and yes (I think...). I was using 2 SATA SSDs for 'quick' storage and 4 SSHDs (500GB HDDs with onboard 8GB flash, yeah they were a thing...) for bulk storage. This was stable enough but not very quick (when running VMs) and the power draw felt a little excessive. I have considered write-endurance but as I think that, as with anything, as long as you are aware of what you're building it for you can select suitable components. Take for example the offerings from WD, the WD Green 1TB offers claims an endurance rating of 80TBW, whereas the Blue version offers 600 and the Red boasts 2000. From what I can see this is on-par with SATA-SSDs (as they essentially use the same or similar flash technology) , and I wouldn't even compare it to HDDs as most of the newer ones I've seen use SMR which is not suitable to NAS applications no matter how the manufacturer tries to sell it... If you compare these based on TBW alone (as PCIe link width and speed are irrelevant in this case) then although the Red is double the price of it's less reliable counterparts, it's supposedly 25 times bore durable than the Green so 'good value' if the TBW written rating is your main consideration. In this version of my build I've used WD SN740 drives which have an advertised endurance of 200TBW. These drives came from new laptops that were being upgraded so didn't cost me much π so ideal for this proof of concept / learning experience.

Thank you! I'll check it out π

It does not break anything, myself and others have been using it this way for months

I am hoping we get 1.0 before black friday (i have no basis for this hope) but if that does happen, i can't imagine a black friday sale to bring hexos down from the full price of $300 to $100.
-
Given the how wildly successful the $99 promotional price was, I think a case could be made that another promo like that would make sense if It brought in similar numbers. Not the same necessarily, but enough to where the math made sense. EG, 4X as many licenses sold in given period would still be double net the income, even at 50% less revenue per license.
-
As an aside, is all your storage NVME? Is it generally accepted that that type of storage is stable enough for a NAS with all the writing and rewriting? Just curious.
-
And to be realistic, it sounds like there were a lot of "Black Friday" licenses purchased so unless they need a fast cash influx what would really be the incentive? This is a business after all. Not to mention, Black Friday is not far off if they feel the need to bring on more people. But I am thinking they have a lot to develop and test with us before that time. These are exciting times in the consumer NAS space.
