you may need to do an immich migration depending on how old of a version of immich you are using

I haven't touched my NAS in a while, so there have been multiple Hex updates since my last login - checked in this weekend and noticed that Immich was not running and there was an update available for it. The app fails to start and returns this error: "[EFAULT] Failed 'up' action for 'immich' app. Please check /var/log/app_lifecycle.log for more details" I tried running that command in shell, but I must be missing some initial commands to get me to a place to run that because it doesn't return anything on its own. Some googling brings me to some TrueNAS forum articles suggesting this issue refers toa 'postgres' issue but I only see two options for this in the TrueNAS side and changing it did not allow the app to start.

I don't think you can setup the curated app with VPN, unless you set up the VPN on your router. Instead you will need to install the app manually in TrueNAS and set it up with Gluetun. See this thread where people have discussed this: I do hope that the HexOS team will create a better solution for this, as the current setup can cause a whole lot of issues for HexOS users.

I installed the HexOS curated Qbittorrent app, and it's working great. Is there anyway to make it use my vpn? I'm using proton vpn.

I'm finally getting into my first home NAS. I plan to add a few things like Immich, Plex, and Home Assistant once i get the base setup up and running. I already have a B560M DS3H V2 motherboard, so I want to base the build on that. This gives me a choice between the 10th and 11th gen of Intel processors. Going with the 10th will be cheaper if I go with i3. With the 11th gen, there was no i3, so I have to get an i5. The newer processors will cost more but will have better iGPU and PCIe Gen 4. With 6 SATA ports, it will be a while before I need an HBA, so the only real difference seems to be the iGPU. There is also a difference in CPU cache from 6 to 12 MB across the range. Looking at what I have locally available, it comes down to: i3-10100/10105 - prices start from about 45$. There are no 10300s. i5-10400/10500/10600 - very few options starting at 105-115$ so it is already double the price of i3. i5-11400/11500/11600 - the prices start from about 115$ (even K version), so it seems to be a better deal than 10th gen i5. Will the difference between older i3 and newer i5 be noticeable? Or, in my case, is it better to get the cheapest option and upgrade in the future if needed? Does the CPU cache matter in these kinds of workloads? Is the newer iGPU worth the price difference? (in context of Plex) AFAIK the RAM speeds/timings do not matter as much as capacity but how much should I get if the plan was to start with 3x6TB or 3x8TB drives depending on what I'll be able to find. Will 16GB of RAM be enough or do I need 32GB?

Question about HexOS long-term sustainability / business model

Hello @jonp, I really appreciate your detailed response. Thanks a lot. -
hard drive dropped out of pool after restart

UPDATE: using the trueNAS UI, I was able to replace the "broken" drive with itself somehow, and that has fixed the issue -
At this time we are only curating applications that are available on the truenas app catalog and seems like matrix/synapse is not on the catalog at this time. I suggest you reach out to the developer of the app and request they submit their app to the truenas app catalog. Instructions on how they can do so can be found at https://github.com/truenas/apps/blob/master/CONTRIBUTIONS.md

Request: Curate Automatic Ripping Machine
Sweet-foe replied to Soid's topic in Roadmap & Feature Requests
I was only ever able to get it working intermittently. It’d dump one disk, then makemkv would start throwing errors whether i was ripping a music cd or not. I think It fails to recognize what type of disk i was inserting. I may try again soon. -
However, that still doesnt solve the issue (i guess software issue/limitation) of the case and cpu fans not be picked up or recognized by HexOS/TrueNAS despite BIOS configuration and MB connections If its a limitation, so be it. But I just want to make sure im not just missing something stupid
-
Nevermind, I finally just gave in to go have a look. There are BIOS/hardware settings for both the CPU Fan and the case fan, though those are a pain to get to. For full circleness, I consulted this reddit post for actually tuning the fans/understanding whatever the hell UGreen decided to do for their fan modulation Specifically this section: (From user u/mwlx86)

Hello, As the title suggests, running HexOS on a UGreen DXP4800 Plus. For the most part, temperature in case is fine, hard drives never get above 40 C. However, under load (especially significant load), the CPU spikes to ~80-90 C and acts like the 2 fan coolers in the case arent doing anything (i.e. the pitiful one on the heat sink and the 140mm case-mounted fan pulling air across the case) I've tried several things to try and even see if I could get control of the case fan through IPMI, but had no luck. Tried a docker app (not exclusively in TrueNAS, ran it locally by command line) called CoolerControl. Supposedly, its supposed to pick up all sensors and hardware (like fans) related to cooling. It picks up my CPU sensors and my hard drives sensors, but cant seem to see either motherboard 4-pin fan Is there something I can adjust in initial boot, either on MB BIOS or HexOS first start? I haven't tried those "physical" methods just due to the pain of physical monitor/keyboard connections from where its currently situated, so i just want to exhaust all non-physical methods before trying to do it by BIOS/Boot menu Any other ideas, im open to Thanks to advance

I think having a curated app for Matrix could be huge for HexOS since it could be a great and easy replacement for Discord.

Question about HexOS long-term sustainability / business model
Todd Miller replied to zavock's topic in Other Questions
I'm personally hoping there is some consulting in the mix as well. I man above what would be deem to be general support issues. For instance, every app I run is accessed by HTTP not HTTPS. I would love someone to point me to suitable options that would help secure my system. And as an example, and only an example, it could dramatically increase my satisfaction with HexOS without actually making any changes to the core product. And if they develop a great solution for someone they can make it available for anyone who needs it either as contract work or as an addon service. It can all mesh together improving my experience and many others overall. -
Question about HexOS long-term sustainability / business model
jonp replied to zavock's topic in Other Questions
First, let me start by saying I actually really appreciate this question and I hope my answer gives you faith in our long-term sustainability, exactly as you mention in the title of this thread. The lifetime license model is appropriate for a very particular type of customer with very specific priorities: Bring your own hardware Doesn't want an ongoing subscription Will mostly support themselves It was the appropriate model to launch with as well because it allowed us to inject a larger cash infusion at the start. However, we see multiple additional revenue streams available to us in the future: Subscription-based licensing. A lower price of entry for customers that aren't ready to make the lifetime commitment. Support. A more premium support model that can help you on a 1:1 basis when you have issues with your server. Cloud-based Services. Things like cloud backups (as an alternative or in addition to buddy backup). There are other cloud-assisted services such as reverse-proxy/relay that may warrant a subscription as well. Hardware products We will never force anyone to buy a specific hardware product to use HexOS, but we may offer some for those that don't want to build their own in the future. We actually have a few other ideas for additional offerings as well that would add additional revenue streams to Eshtek, but those are a little premature to discuss at this point. Bottom line: we don't just have a product plan, we have a full business plan for the future of this company and it has been designed to ensure a few key things: We don't run out of cash. We don't have to take on outside investors. We can remain true to our mission and vision. I hope this answers your question and gives you more confidence in our plans for the future. And if you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask! -
It is most likely because of one of two reasons. your redis and postgres passwords are not the same (It can be found on the original machine in the truenas ui when you edit the app) or your postgres version for immich is different (it can also be found the same way) Chances are if you first installed immich a long time ago and did a manual migration back then we would have to do a fresh install for you. If either of the follow doesn't work for you Dm me with your availability and timezone and we can have a support meeting.

As title states, sever was running fine. 3 hard drives were initially in the pool, after a restart I got a warning that the pool status is degraded. Upon checking, I noticed that only 2 drives were in the pool "sda" and "sdc" but "sdb" is unused despite being reported as healthy. any explanation/fix? It doesn't seem to let me add my drive back. thanks.

Question about HexOS long-term sustainability / business model
Cantos replied to zavock's topic in Other Questions
The point is that Eshtek is trying to be fair. Until they provide a service, which has ongoing costs (such as cloud backup/storage), there is no reason to charge subscription for HexOS. The base license will remain a one time purchase. It is just a piece of software that you should be able to run more or less indefinitely as is. Sure, they could charge you for that, but why would you want them to? -
Question about HexOS long-term sustainability / business model
zavock replied to zavock's topic in Other Questions
Thank you all for your replies! I understand that you may already have plans in place, even if this isn’t the right time to discuss them publicly. However, the sentence “they may also provide a subscription service” is not very reassuring at the moment. I would have preferred to read “they will” or “they must,” as that would sound more realistic and proactive to me. This thread was simply about whether the team is being realistic about this. I’m genuinely trying to be constructive here — I really want this project to succeed! -
