And ServerTheHome, quote: Synology Lost the Plot with Hard Drive Locking Move https://www.servethehome.com/synology-lost-the-plot-with-hard-drive-locking-move/ It's really a pitty, but it seems Synology don't want to have consumers as customers

The HexOs is / was waiting for the TrueNas 25.04 release. This release will be the fundament for VM support in HexOs See: https://hexos.com/blog/hexos-q1-status-update Quote: Rescheduling VM Support Similar to what happened with Docker, iXsystems is in the process of migrating TrueNAS SCALE to a new VM and Linux Container management environment in their next major release, 25.04. Incus promises to provide a few key feature improvements, including a better web-based VNC agent. As such, focusing on VM management features in the short term didn’t make sense given that the ground would be moving beneath our feet. Furthermore, in temperature checking our current community, it appears that increasing application support and buddy backups are of a higher desire. It is for these reasons we have lower the priority of VM features. Keep in mind, you can still create VMs within TrueNAS itself, and we will give you start/stop controls from our Command Deck dashboard for them.

I'm just eager to get access to LXC containers in TrueNAS so while I think I could do this too, I want to continue to support the HexOS path and will wait for the official upgrade so I can best support the project. I'll check back in a month or so and see where my willpower is though. 😛

Yup XD I'll make an FYI post in Setup & Installation's category, since that seems like an appropriate section. As it is an interesting bit of information, like you said, it will probably be appreciated by those who might be wanting to know the potential things to expect if they were to attempt it to better be informed.

I don't have too much experience with smaller builds but this is what i would do First i would start with a m.2 to pcie 16x adapter like this https://a.co/d/iQgjdVb I would then install a lsi/broadcom hba card that is no older than the broadcom 9305 (other options include 9400 and 9500) since they are the only ones that support pcie 3.0 speeds. if you have a case large enough for internal drives i would pick a hba card with an i suffix (i for internal) if you don't i would use a hba card with an e suffix (e for external) There are also one more number next to the letter denoting how many drives the card will support. so if you are okay with capping out at 10 drives internally something like the broadcomm 9305-8i would work for you (8 drives on hba card and 2 drives on motherboard) However if you want to install your drives externally i would get something like this https://a.co/d/ghTg1vF since doesn't use usb but rather sata or some other external storage that has the same external port as the hba card (sff-8644 for the 9305 and 9400) this might seem daunting, and it does kinda feel that way. Maybe someone else can give you a better solution. For the record i don't know enough about the m.2 to pcie 16x adapter or the hdd enclosure to recommend those exact models. you might want to do some research to find out what are the most reliable products in their class.

Updating truenas is something the team explicitly said not to do and that it is an unsupported usecase. So making a bug report probably would not get acted on by the team. However it'll probably be appreciated by anyone looking up update truenas.

Hexos should do fine for your use case. You would want to install some things like tailscals to allow remote access to your server. Just make sure your Internet speeds at the observatory is good enough for a 120mb upload every minute. I don't get symmetrical upload from my Internet service provider so i no doubt would have too slow Internet despite paying for 1gb download.

Hello. I am wondering if HexOS is the right solution for an astronomy club I am in. We have an observatory with a telescope. When running it takes a 120MB photo (of a galaxy, nebula, star cluster etc.) every 1-5 minutes. We also will be taking high resolution video of planets and the Sun. We typically deal with many GB of data per night and it quickly adds up to TB of data after a few weeks. What the club wants to do is send all of this data to a NAS in our headquarters building which is about 80 miles from the observatory. And then set up user accounts so that club members can log in and download the data. Would a HexOS NAS solution be good for a use case like this?

Thanks for your detailed response. How would you add drives to my setup? I want to purchase another rack mounted chassis for HDDs* and hook that chassis up to my server. Could you point me in any direction? N.b. I do already have the server

That is a definitely interesting thought. I would imagine/hope that when the HexOS team makes their update, it would include an updater for the TrueNAS side as well (possible either downgrading or otherwise just refreshing some kind of settings? not sure on how that side works). I will be sure to followup with it whenever HexOS pushes their next version ^_^ definitely one of those things that I imagine should be tested as there are those of us users who are advanced enough to feel comfortable playing with the TrueNAS side of things but want the HexOS side as an option, and I believe that many of us will be likely to update things on TrueNAS without much thought XD With that, currently debating if the hardware status break is an issue worth making a "bug" report over since while it is an explicit user decision going into the TrueNAS side regardless of the warnings they give, but is also something that can easily happen if someone does go into the TrueNAS side and sees "oh, there is an update? Don't mind if I do~"

I wonder if more things will break when upgrading to the next version hexos if you are upgrading from a different version of truenas.

As long as you start with 3 drives (2 for storage +1 for parity) you can expand the the drive pool using raidz expansion. To my best understanding raidZ expansion is similarly taxing on your drives as resilvering is. Doing it multiple times might increase risk of drive failure. Alternatively you can add storage vdevs of equal size every time you want to expand. Theoretically it is less taxing on your drives. example you start with a 3 drive raidz1 pool, you can add another 3 drive raid z1 vdev to the same pool and your storage will double. However as far as i know this will have to be done in the truenas ui. HexOS may or may not properly recognize your DAS. For most DAS hexos only sees one of the many drives making it pretty pointless. This is because most mutli drive enclosures don't pass on the serial numbers of each drive to the os but rather the same generic serial number for all the drives, confusing the os. The off chance it does pass along the serial numbers, hexos will be able to see it and use it but we don't recommend using external storage as it can cause problems The off chance you haven't bought your hardware yet, i would like remind you that intel 13th and 14th gen cpus have been prone to dying. Intel did release a microcode update that should fix the issue but they said that multiple times so its not something i would like to roll the die on. But if you did buy it already make sure to do a bios update. Theoretically since you have a T sku itll be less likely to pull the power needed to fry itself. Also don't use a 1tb ssd for your boot drive. Hexos/Truenas only uses a very small amount of storage for the os (under 16gb iirc) and then locks away the rest of the storage. We generally recommend the smaller ssds in order to not waste your money. Taking a quick look at this motherboard It uses a realtek nic (network interface card) and while it might work, it might also cause problems. a lot of unexpected bugs have been because of realtek nics It also only has 2 sata ports and no pcie slots so you will have to use a m.2 to sata adapter, if you want to add more drives. I'm not familiar with the reliability of that kind of adapter so hopefully someone else chimes in on that regard. However i generally see people recommending pcie hba cards for additional sata expansion. Coming from PC building i made a lot of silly mistakes building my first nas. So many things you just wouldn't expect like the realtek nic.

QNAP TL-R1200C-RP using it as DAS and 9x 10tb WD 3.5" HDDs A server with the following specs: - PRO H610T D4-CSM LGA1700 Motherboard - 14th Gen Core i7 14700T 1.3GHz 20C/28T 35W - Corsair Vengeance 32GB DDR4 RAM - 120W power adapter - Samsung 990 PRO 1TB SSD How does HexOS do the drive pools, I plan on adding drives as the years go on and hope to have the one storage location. Will HexOS see the TL-R1200C as more storage?

Synology refresh - what are they aim for?
kysian replied to Sonic's topic in Coffee Talk (Off-Topic)
Same here. Especially with the news of them limiting storage to only their own rebranded ones or 3rd-party certified drives which has not been updated in years. Seeing their path forward has convinced me to jump ship and when my Synology NAS is running long in the tooth, I hope HexOS will be ready for primetime for my transition, with my pick of much better hardware to boot. -
Followup~ Definite breaks some things in the HexOS deck dashboard. Dash: Processor and Memory readings are completely incorrect (TrueNAS dashboard says processor is 2% while HexOS says its 98%, so I think it is flipped, showing unutilized CPU as utilized) and RAM is not showing any data on the HexOS side of things. The Network information seems to be accurate for up and down stream. HDD usage on HexOS and TrueNAS seem to be in conflict (though I didn't look at the difference before updating XD). HexOS states I have used 0.5 TB / 23.83 TB, while TrueNAS states it is 464.39 GiB / 21.22 TiB (granted, maybe TiB and TB are different units of measurement? not sure on that myself). Folders: User creation and deletion works without a problem. Folder creation, deletion, and permission assignment works as well. Storage: Cannot verify as I don't want to delete and remake my pool XD Apps: Stop/Start works. Launch never worked for me before and still doesn't work. I uninstalled plex successfully. Reinstall was also successful. Settings: All seems well here. Final observation: Things are taking a bit more time to actually show up in the Deck dashboard for HexOS, but it is a difference of a few seconds longer. Obvious notes of "this is just my observation and applied to my setup with my hardware, etc... etc... etc...", so proceed at your own discretion XD For my case though, kinda sad the system utilization info is inaccurate on the Deck dash now, as it is nice to see that remotely, but it isn't the end of the world as I can check it at home from the TrueNAS UI.

Looking forward to seeing the results, as i really want to upgrade to TrueNAS 25.04 for the new VM tools

I was originally going to go with 10 drives plus 1 spare and no SLOG drive. Then I remembered I had new SSDs laying around for a couple years and my OCD would go nuts knowing I had unfilled bays... so I put HDs in them since I bought a couple extras as emergency spares in case of failure -

I use Proxmox and I installed HexOs in a VM with SATA and NVME passtrough. I am not the only one in this forum with such a setup. In the past I used VMWare ESXi, but since the Broadcom takeover it is not suitable for a homelab anymore. -

@Iliyria, Is there a specific reason you created one big RaidZ2 pool with 13 HDDs? Why not e.g. a pool with 7 HDDs and one with 6 HDDs? From what I have read online people recommend raidz2 if the number of disks are between 8 - 12 because the resilver time is too long and there's a high chance of another disk failing during the process. But say that it's better to use less disks in a pool. I try to learn a lot about ZFS.
