ThunderKnife started following New server build
-
Hi, Currently i'm using my very old computer as homeserver. I have plex running on it including sonarr/radarr/prowlarr. Future use will also be home assistant. However ever since installing sabnzbd it keeps crashing. Probably because it's to resource intensive. This is my old build. Intel i5-3450 8BGB of ram 128GB sata SSD as Boot 5 16TB seagate Exos X18 I'm currently looking for a new build but don't exactly know what I should get. I have my eyes on a build I could buy for €1200(1400$) however don't know if it is worth it or maybe overkill. ASUS X99-Dual (Intel X99 chipset, dual-socket LGA2011-3) 2× Intel Xeon E5-2695 v4 (18 cores / 36 threads per CPU) Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4060 Ti Gaming OC 8GB 8× 32GB SK Hynix DDR4 ECC RDIMM 2400MHz I'm going to use the same boot and HDD's. Should I get the build or could I get something more worth the money. I'm willing to spend around the price I already mentioned. Thanks for the help.

usb Automatically backup "every" device
PsychoWards replied to José Encarnação's topic in Roadmap & Feature Requests
Hey, Backups are done over the local network or Internet (which requires additional setup) and are done using the existing network connection. Using an USB cable to connect to your server is not supported. What exactly do you want to backup from your devices? There are different ways and apps, depending on what you want to do. Backing up pictures from your phones (and Mac maybe?) you can use Immich, which is a one click install app in Hexos. For documents you could use something like paperless, which requires manual loading of the files and is more like a document manager, rather then a simple backup solution. And there are other solutions to backup every kind of data. For your family, not living in your house, to be able to backup to your server you need to either setup a VPN or Cloudflare Tunnel or similar. Hexos is using ZFS and in ZFS it's called RaidZ1 and not Raid5 🙂 Also please post your specs of your Server which you want to use, this way we can identify possible incompatibilities and issues beforehand and mitigate them. - Yesterday

usb Automatically backup "every" device
José Encarnação replied to José Encarnação's topic in Roadmap & Feature Requests
Also ... Data backup noob here! My goto experience on backups is having multiple HDDs, seperate and offline, and 1TB on OneDrive but not using the sync part... just drag and drop for an faux 3-2-1 best practice. So, is or will HexOS aim for that? -
usb Automatically backup "every" device
José Encarnação posted a topic in Roadmap & Feature Requests
Hi and happy hollidays. After learning Linus was invested on this software, and understanding how much it takes the load of spending time to make TrueNAS do what developers are doing by coding this software ... and that TrueNAS themselves are invested as well, I'm almost convinced and pressing the Buy button, which I'll do after a bit more research if some requirements are met: Combined I use Samsung S23 Ultra (android), a Gaming PC (win11), a work laptop (w11) and an iPad Pro (iPadOS). My gf an iPhone 15 and a Macbook M1. So, I'm interested in backing up (incremental backup, mind you) all those devices by plugin in a cable and little more operation, but also, having my parents, siblings and nephews to remote backup onto an old PC I retired and is gaining dust in the attic, and I'm considering making a RAID 5 NAS for starters. Is the "backing up devices by pluging-in a cable" a thing in HexOS, or any NAS system for that matter? (my ignorance says it can't be that difficult if DEVICES are once validated and while nothing changes like a Factory Reset) Maybe for whom need so, having a 2FA app for "unlocking" the NAS server to allow backing up the connected device? That's my main concern / interest on having an Incremental Backup solution that is painless and not Hardcore Secure when it comes to input data to backup. Cheers from Portugal, and from what I've searched on the forum, this question wasn't yet put in this terms. Thanks in advance and happy holidays! -

Makes sense that failover/high availability stuff would be more complex. Good to know that data backup is feasible though! Thank you!
-
Hey, yes this is a good idea, I currently have a similar setup, Hexos as main Server, Unraid as on site backup and a synology NAS as an off-site backup, planing to replace Unraid with Hexos once the HDD prices are normalising again. Let's first start with backups: Since Buddy Backup currently isn't available, you will need to setup the task replication in the truenas GUI to backup to your other Hexos. Since this is not in your local network you need to setup a VPN connection or URL or similar to be able to connect both server together. For the backup to your Unraid, you can use rsync to backup to it. Having app failover is an entire different and way more complex topic. The above backup is only creating snapshot but it's no live backup meaning it cannot be used for app failover since the data is not live. Hexos/Truenas Scale doesn't have app failover support, this is exclusively reserved for the entireprise stuff. I know that some apps have some way to have this, but this depends on the app and requires additional setup per app etc. The easiest thing would likely be running everything in a VM in proxmox and have High Availability setup, but this comes with it's own set of restrictions. Unfortunately, there is no easy or moderate complex way to set up app failver

OK, so I've got myself a couple of HexOS licenses. Additionally, I have an Unraid lifetime license. Here's the plan: Build three NAS...es (what's the plural of NAS? 🤔) Primary: HexOS Main NAS Secondary: HexOS Offsite "buddy" backup Tertiary: Unraid Backup/replicate my HexOS NAS to a NAS running Unraid. I did consider a third HexOS license, but running a NAS with a different OS gives me additional redundancy to protect against any issues caused by the OS (be that HexOS or Unraid). Here are my questions: Is this even a good idea? Has anyone done (or is planning to do) something similar to this? Since this would be the third backup/copy of my data, just file backups (and things like app config information backups) would probably suffice, at least for now. It would be cool if there is a way to have app redundancy/failover, since both platforms do run apps using Docker. That is beyond my expectations, though.

Another quarter until version 1.0. Can't say I'm not disappointed, but I get that quality takes time. At least give us a bone in the meantime.

Are we really talking about the "failure" of HexOS before we even go live? I got told off when I brought up this possibility several months ago and I was just talking about having backups. Can we at least wait until either Eshtek sounds a warning of some critical issue, Eshtek misses a checkpoint established for a specific date or they go even more silent?
-
I am well aware, but the abandonment is not the issue. Your 600 eurodollars does not guarantee the perpetual existence of Eshtek. There are many ways HexOS could go south and no big tech with big money need be involved at all. The key thing is how HexOS is abandoned. And even Google is capable of gracefully shutting down services like Stadia, where everyone got a refund and the controller got Bluetooth mode instead of turning into e-waste. HexOS is not guaranteed to become useless just because it has online activation right now. Probably? Isn't it definitely? The data is in a ZFS pool that you should be able to import into TrueNAS, no?
-
As we have seen in the past with countless IOT devices, buying something that requires third party closed-source infrastructure to function is likely to be bricked one day. One day Google might come around with big-tech-money, buy Eshtek to own a small part of the tech stack or a license or something and abandon everything else ... Yes, thanks to trueNAS my data could probably be restored, but I still payed at least 600€ (2 licenses) for a then dead service that I would have liked to continue to use. This would only take effect if it comes to a reinstall but it will happen eventually. Don't get me wrong, the fact that its a one time purchase is great, but it could be even better. You are right, I forgot about the option to tinker with the underlying trueNAS. Thanks for the reminder :D
-
Truenas itself already offers a lot of possibilities, you have the standard rsync which you can use to backup to virtually any other type of NAS and you have the replication task which you can use to backup to another truenas/hexos server. If you're looking for options for more tech savvy users, truenas already offers them, there is no need to wait for Hexos to implement them. 🙂
-
I assume the online activation is there because HexOS is a commercial product. Shutting down activation would really only make sense with the shut down of Eshtek as a company (or the end of development and sale of HexOS). I think it is very likely that if that ever happens they will remove the activation requirement before shutting down deck.hexos.com. And even if they decided, for some bizarre reason, to brick HexOS, the underlying TrueNAS SCALE would still work just like it does now, so nobody would be truly cooked anyway.
-
I read that too :( I hope they change their mind about that. If HexOS gets sold in a few years and the buyer decides to shutdown the activation service (which is not unlikely) we are cooked. I wouldn't mind a more complex solution as an option for tech savvy customers. A simple open source "connection broker" running on docker would be great, don't you think?
-
I believe they have confirmed that HexOS will be able to be used completely offline. If I recall correctly, Offline activation may not be supported and for buddy backup a method will be possible, but the setup may not be as easy/convenient. Lastly I believe it's undecided if outbound connections can be disabled like the deck outside of air gaping the system.
-
Hi everyone, I was reading the post about the upcoming local GUI, when a question came to my mind. Will there ever be a "true local" solution in the future, that does not depend on HexOS' Servers at all? I am quite concerned about this, because as long as a connection to offsite infrastructure is needed I will not be able to redo my HexOS install if said infrastructure is out off order. Which is not unlikely to happen one day. Same goes for the buddy backup, will there be a way to establish a peer to peer connection without relying on HexOS' servers? I really like the idea of HexOS but once I bought a license and downloaded my ISO I would prefer to be independent from you, if I want to. Regards, D3I5

It's here!!! https://forums.truenas.com/t/truenas-25-10-1-is-now-available/60830. Can't wait until this is integrated into HexOS!

Is it supported now?

One thing to keep in mind, and this is true for most folks who look at Youtube videos to do their installations. Like the video above, that installation is on an old and getting more out of date version of TrueNAS. The bigger the gap, the weirder errors. For my first installation of Nextcloud I followed this video and completely messed up HexOS. I am betting I made an unwise security change because nothing would run at all. Doing installs from out of date videos will probably make more work for the dev team since they probably have the TrueNAS knowledge to do things right the first time and can't predict what you did differently. I would never say stop experimenting because that would make me a hypocrite. Just make full backups.
